Why so many 996TT F/S
 

I may be suffering from observation bias - as I have one - but I just went on 6 speed online and there were a bunch of 996 TTs for sale. Then I look here and see more. Or more accurately more than I’m used to.

Is it the season? Taxes? Something else?
Or are there an unusually large number of TTs on the block right now?

Prices have been strong and keep creeping up. I think a few people, especially those who bought one for a song in the dark days of a few years ago and did bad mods to them, are trying to cash in and move on.

Prices have had a bump in the last year or two. They come out of the wood work when that happens. I have seen many on the market not selling at higher prices last few months.

If I could snag one I would.

My opinion, they're the pinnacle of performance value in the entire marque line-up right now.

A buddy recently bought a very nice example.

A lot of articles have said the same thing in the last year. I suspect it may be driving the number of them being brought to market by people hoping to cash in. I see a lot of high asks that sit. It's the best deal going in a Mezger engine, but lots of sellers are dreaming after reading one to many blogs.

They are great cars and I just traded mine in on another 911, I just could never “love” it from an asthetics perspective.

I'm thinking about selling mine, it's silver/black. Only 23,000 miles on it.
I love the car but have old air cooled classics and my truck. I just cannot drive them all, thus 23,000 miles on the 2001. Fantastic car but very refined for my tastes. I love my old cars.

With 19,000 made there’s plenty around

I don't mind the headlights, but considering the lengths guys here go to to re-hab a 911, I would think a 996 headlight modification would be a weekend project!

Not quite. Very many of those 19k were defiled into tacky trackish hotrods back when you could buy one for $25k. Clean 996TTs that are still more or less stock and well taken care of are not rare but not as plentiful as that number suggests, either.

Finding one that’s not silver or seal grey is the real trick.

Definitely too refined and stupid fast for a caveman !

I feel like 50% came in Silver with that horrendous full Grey interior from the factory. Still one of the best bangs for the buck.

Natural grey leather is much nicer. My 4S had that back when they were expensive. Brown in the TT took a little getting used to this go around.

that's how unfulfilled I was with the 10 months of 996tt ownership that it took me 3 weeks to read a post on them. you pretty much nailed it with your point ive quoted. after I got used to the turbo poooowwaaah it got stale. the nannies ruined the driving experience for me and after a couple months of ownership I could not wait to get back into aircooled car.


I can drive my 75 at 3/4 the pace on a twisty road of the 6tt having it require twice the skill. thankfully as you know pnutz this caveman posses the required skill set to do so:D.. silly, silly pnutz

As mentioned by Mr. Monson (if memory serves), guys are jettisoning the front drive. Seems like a no-brainier. Drop 2-300# and get a proper front end. I’d sign up for that.
However there is a thing called Giulia Quadrifoglio which is somewhat distracting.

The allure of a boxy, four door Mom sedan distracts you from the thought of owning a 996TT?!?! :eek:

That's even more bizarre than Caveman Toby claiming that his mini-beef, n/a 911 (with stone age carberation, no front spoiler and no wing, nonetheless!) is preferable to the ground pounder he used to own, and SickRick claiming that motoring with 180hp at his command is bliss (or maybe that was 130 hp, considering he was talking about a Middie, after all)! :)

I could not do important work on the car and that scared the baaajesus out of me. I can drop my junk and change a clutch in a few hours in the 75 and previous 78. including forgetting to install the ring gear the 1st time. I did not have that ingrained experience with the newer model and so the wrenching aspect of the hobby diminished a bunch for me.


the 6tt did cost my buddy who has one at least $6k for a new clutch. yikes! I can get my carbs rebuilt for that all day!!!

Take care with how many of the Blue Bombers that you neck down at one time, Tobs - more than four hours without droppage can mean trouble!!!

PS - I totally get what you're saying about diminished hobby aspect and ridiculous Porsche water pumper tax (guess even more ridiculous that the air cooled, bendover taxes?!), Bro.

I highly doubt a significant number were turned to track hot rods as you suggest. Maybe a few hundred, a thousand at most. So what you still have 18,000 left. Not rare.

I think with market recognition and up to 40% appreciation in the past 3-4 years, some people are thinking about cashing out.

I don't recall seeing many of these around in the $20's and surely not the desirable ones. Sure maybe some high miles tip cars but not many changes hands in the 20's or low 30's. Still... These things were and are screaming bargains for the kind of performance they offer.

I agree - Kinda like the old adage that “it’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than to drive a fast car slow.” Not too slow of a car of course, and it has to be a manual transmission...

My bucket list car is a 997.2 GT3, but with rising values and the fear of too much car for the street, I’m rethinking my options...

The 996 tt are great cars but to me too common and too boring.
It’s another modern day Porsche that does all the work for you. Especially the tips, Cars were weak for awhile then shot up to many at $50-60k the X50 helps a lot.
But for the money now I perfer the 997.2 C2S Manual of course for about same prices.
Plus, it’s a car air cooled geeks would have trouble enjoying except with the wife
