Early notice 40 years-owned 1978 911SC coupe

143K miles.

Black with tan leather, sport seats 7 & 8s. $6K trans overhaul last year.

NO SUNROOF

Thinking low $40s.

Should be ready for market in 2 weeks.

I have a soft spot for 78's. The transmission overhaul is nice to have but I'd like to hear about the engine rebuild at low $40's.

My logic is this: if it did have an engine rebuild, how much would it bring then?

Is the need for a rebuild a given at this mileage?

Of course not. My point is/was, if it did have a rebuild say, within the last 10K miles, what would the price be then? Low to mid $50's?

TW is an expert in the marketplace, so I trust his judgement. I just don't see this car going for that kind of dough, although the west coast is a different place for Porsches.

Early SC

A really clean/no accident history/good running early SC with a rebuilt 915, no sunroof, sport seats, and 7”/8” Fuchs is a sought after car.

The color hurts it a little (a guy down the street has a similar Continental Orange coupe - SNAP!), but I think the number is fair.

A lot of air cooled SC/Carrera’s had their odometers break or they were disconnected. I’d place a premium on an honestly represented car.

Have the head studs been done ?
No sunroof is a plus but I think low 40's is ambitious anywhere except maybe BAT.

Hagerty currently places a condition 3 SC coupe at $40 and condition 2 at $55k. I think he’s right in the range.

Guys, I can't tell you how much I appreciate the feedback.

I'm in the early stages on this car and I have to deal with one final cosmetic issue before putting it on the market. Okay, maybe two.

Personally, I appreciate the completeness of the car's history (every receipt since 79 is in a binder) and the fresh trans is kind of a big deal. On the basis of a cold start, I see no indication of head stud issues, and as it had a recent valve adjustment, that appears to be the case. In addition, as this is one of 5 cars and a motorcycle owned by this family, it was not a daily driver, but used mainly on weekend trips. Meaning not an excessive amount of heat cycling. Having said that, we all know head studs don't always last forever on these cars. In my experience, a contributing factor to head studs snapping is surface corrosion on the studs. That is less common in cars that lived in Southern California all their lives. But there isn't any model of 911 whose purchase decision doesn't include a lingering doubt about some kind of failure (stud pulling in 2.7s and early valve guide wear and head stud snapping in 3.2s being among the examples).

Again, thanks!
