Engine sound pads
 

I always snicker when a seller emphasizes that a car needs nothing. Car is regularly serviced, needs nothing, recent engine drop for reseal, valve job, rebuild, etc. Yet the engine pad is drooping and or disintegrating. How long does a sound pad last?

The new, authentic Porsche ones are garbage that begin to fall apart within a year of install (the outer coating jumps off if you look at it wrong and the foam is so wispy and delicate that it seems like someone's idea of a prank). That said, it wouldn't surprise me if the one's you are talking about are the originals that the owner did not replace out of laziness (it's a fairly messy and nasty job).

What do you use instead? Dynamat or equivalent? Is there another foam product that holds up in the engine bay?

The quilted soundpad is okay, but puts off too much of an old geezer vibe for me . . . would look much better in black!

Mixed76, the next time I need to buy an engine bay pad, I am not sure what I will use. I wouldn't want the foil covered ones I've seen for sale, and will never buy a Porsche one again, so I would either have to search harder for a quality one in black, or maybe make my own out of some very high quality, closed cell foam.

LOL, you wish, fun as it is here, there are better things to do during a vacation, an undertaking "Ponyboy" seems to do often, to the chagrin of the caveman who sorely misses the regular beating, I'm certain. Gearbox swap is next on the list.

Back to the soundpad, why do you need one let alone a designer leather hand stiched piece ?

Helps keep some of the engine heat out of the cabin, Nutz. Here in TexASS, every little bit of heat blocking is necessary (unless one is a caveman, and enjoys marinating in one's own stink while motoring! :eek:).

I say it's more for the sound unless it's caveman carbs back firing in which case a fireproof reflective material would be more appropriate than that flimsy foam. Doesn't seem like it gets that hot a few feet away from the block.

save it nutz. well set up carbs are not the flame throwers you seem to believe them to be. I could not imagine living a life that things I did not understand would scare me so much as carbs seem to scare you.

live a little, take some chances from time to time, learn about something you don't understand. it will be fulfilling at the end of the day. possibly more so than being on ponyboys teet, unless you like it there of course.
