Speedo/Odometer Change in Car - Value

Hi all,

I am looking at a car that has had a documented odometer swap after the original odometer failed. They still have the original speedo in a box with the mileage noted in the documentation from the dealership back in the 90's. The replacement speedo started at "0" miles and they have documentation of work done since then.

The carfax report indicated "possible rollback" but I believe the documentation clears up the issue.

What effect on value and/or other concerns should I have if I purchase this car after a PPI?

Thanks!
Chris

Matters what the car is.

Hi Matt -

It's an 86 911.

What was the actual mileage when the odometer was replaced and zeroed out?

It was around 65,000 or so miles. The new speedo has around 40K and the old one is in the box and still with the car.

If it were me, I wouldn’t be worried about it. Sounds like it checks out. When it comes time to sell you tell the same story. Not sure you’ll get much discount on the car. If the mileage were sketchy maybe. Plus it’s not a very low mileage car. The more miles the less it will matter. And since the car is new enough to have a six digit odo, there’s less chance it’s 205k mi versus 105k.

Ultimately you’ve got to buy the seller. I can unplug my odometer anytime. They didn’t have to document the switch, but they did. That’s good in my eyes. We used to sell Euro Odis, new in box, to replace 85mph Speedos. Tons were swapped with no back up.

Thanks for the words of wisdom!

You should not be shy about asking CARFAX - with appropriate documentation which you seem to have - to remove their 'possible rollback' statement. I and others I know have been able to get things removed that are inaccurate that has/can hurt the value of the ar.

I know of a shop that has a cabinet full of speedos that changes them out when others break. To know the history of yours and to have the original in a box that comes with the car speaks to the care of ownership, and that itself speaks volumes.

Though my gauges needed restoration 20 years ago, and I did it then for $600 at North Hollywood gauge shop sent from Japan, I know personally what I've got. Previous milage I have photographed on analog photos at 8000 km. Anything you can verify and prove first hand is of value.

I snapped these late last year, 20 years in storage, but they can still verify even though the odometer reads 00000.
