stanced again...

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/1034130-1990-porsche-911-964-showcar.html#post10516393

anybody from the stance and airbag crowd here? why do they always pick on the 964’s? any chance he gets anything close to his ask?

to each their own and all that, but i’ll never understand stancing one of these cars. it has to completely marginalize the handling and drivability, no?...

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1990-porsche-911-carrera-4-8/ - Same car, RNM at 36k.

Seeing stanced cars never bums me out. Usually not a huge issue to put them back to stock, as long as "frame rails" haven't been notched or any other goofiness. 964s get the treatment because they're coilover cars to start with - easy to put an airbag setup on them. That, and Porsche purist nerds poo-pood em forever, so I think more than a couple of these stancebros bought in when they were cheap.

As for handling, etc - I've heard you can set up an airbag car to ride okay but I imagine it has to hurt performance to some degree. I imagine it's bad-comfortable (soft & cushy) rather than bad-harsh.

Because it’s the first year of coil overs from the factory. Plus what do you expect t of someone with gsxr in the screennane? Probably came over from imports.

I would never do that to one of my cars. But I understand the look and style. More of a show car thing than performance.
I prefer the look verses a RWB. Neither owner is going to track the car anyway.

Sometimes it's better not to "show your work."

Stance is great. Looks great. More fun to drive at moderate speeds due to better response. Who cares if you aren't tracking it?

I totally agree with you! For the same reason, I like to deflate my tires to 8 to 10 PSI! And have you ever taken the shock absorbers and struts off--what a hoot!

Hey, I'm not trying to win the Indy 500 over here!

Typical strawman argument. Here, I will try again:

https://imgur.com/gallery/v7Ust

Read this. All cars have stance. Stance is the combination of ride height, wheel fitment, and tire selection. I'm a designer. Look at ANY concept sketch, and you will see the same thing; larger wheels, flush with the body of the car, centered in the wheel arch. This is the aesthetic ideal. It looks best to those who have spent hundreds of hours learning about design principles.

Then during production, you ahve bumpstops, bump steering, suspension compliance on rough roads, cost, bean counters, etc and that vision gets watered down bit by bit by bit.

Nobody is suggesting you go MAD STANCE BRO and do extreme negative camber wheels. But dropping a car on the ground and centering the wheels in the wheel arches ALWAYS LOOKS GOOD.

But this is just ONE type of stance; saying you hate stance is like saying you hate hate music, or you hate food. There are so many different aesthetics and combinations it really makes you sound clueless.

This right here is funny. I'm so glad we have these experts to look out for us or we would all be driving around in ugly less than ideal cars.

are you for real? did you understand the gist of my original post?

forgoing the stock suspension if favor of airbags in a 964 will destroy the feel and drivability of the car, looks be damned. perhaps i'm feeble, but i fail to see why that makes any sense. as such, i was curious what the peanut gallery thought of the ask on the car. seems outrageously high for a car that's been built solely to look "cool" at a show while it sits on the ground.

that car looks cartoonish. i'd way rather drive a car built by an engineer than a designer, apparently...

A 911 on airbags is still going to outhandle/drive 99% of the vehicles on the road.

Again, if you aren't competing for lap times, why does it bother you so much that someone would trade 5% of the performance for better aesthetics?

Glad you found it funny. Industrial design is what makes things look/feel/awesome.

If engineers were the only ones designing cars we would all be driving **** like this:

That depends entirely on the kit. Ever heard of bagover kits? Small airbag with a coilover built into it. You can dump it at shows or on the freeway, and it's still on coils/handles nice. Fluff it up a big higher for more compliance/comfort and more height, or pump them up all the way the bag is basically eliminated again, and the coilover does all the work.

Aesthetic is from a Greek word that broadly means feel (or sense iirc).
So technically the designers amongst us are partly right - I see that car and I feel sick.
Perhaps not ideal, but it certainly makes me feel something.

Max is the consummate working man 911 owner. He’s got a problem with Singers on principal.
