Six Porsches to buy/ hold/ sell

https://www.hagerty.com/articles-videos/articles/2019/07/11/porsche-models-to-buy-sell-or-hold-summer-2019?utm_source=SFMC&utm_medium=email&utm_content= Daily_News_Monday_July_15

Not sure I agree with this list but thought it was an interesting perspective.

No mention of:

997 GT3RS - I would say never sell
914-6 - Never sell
356 speedster - Never sell
73 RS - Never sell
74 / 75 Carrera - Hold

My understanding is that these lists are based on the number of inquiries they're getting for each model--it's their proxy for what's "hot" or isn't. Do they also overlay price info?

In any case, I believe that the relative weakness in the 930 market (compared to SCs, Carreras, etc.) is overdone. But what do I know?

Have no real knowledge of the others but I can see 996TT prices trending up and 930 trending down. The TT may be the only car ever that I sell for more than I paid for it. Maintenance costs not included of course.

Hagerty has more info than many but not all the ppl
and having info ... well lots wrong info
also buy to hold.. does that mean to drive or to invest or whatever..
too many variables

997 GT3RS4.0 - have it never sell
914-6 - bought one, love it Never sell
CGT - have it never sell

I take any of the above over their list.

Of course the real question is buy/sell/hold a Porsche 993 manual coupe? I'm thinking HOLD at this time. The 993s have already experienced the air-cooled softening that all the other air cooled models are experiencing now.

If you're holding it as an "investment" then you're probably going to be disappointed, especially if you continue to drive it. You have to consider the costs to keep driving it too. I don't want to get into the investment analysis yet again but you need to compare the possible appreciation to the risk free rate and the average market return.

993's are great cars, just like all the other air cooled 911's they had a big pop and they have softened some. The ones bringing big money now are only the special models or the low low miles garage queens which are well documented.

Keep it and drive it so you can enjoy it. If the price keeps up with inflation and the miles you put on it, and the costs to keep it on the road, thats even better.

What would be really great is if it were possible to short some of these cars.

I read the article and it sure looks pretty obvious to me why they made those choices.

Such ashamed about all of these cars. This hobby was a whole lot more fun when a nice G50 Carrera coupe or a 964 C2 Coupe was $20 to $25k. Years ago there was a thread on Rennlist that stretched dozens and dozens of pages debating whether or not paying a few more grand for an RSA over a similar C2 Coupe was worth it. I paid $36k for an RSA in 1999.

The hobby was more fun , not only were the cars less but so were the parts.

I know I am old but 20-30 years ago, there was never the question of a car as an investment or discussion of deprecation. Sure they depreciated as soon as you drove them off the car lot if you purchased new, but it was never the main focus of a car conversation while having a beer with other car friends.

Wow I am old - I just received my 35 year PCA membership sticker.!!

I do miss there no longer hobby cars. A hobby car you can personalize/ customize and not worry about the value.

Mine is in that category. I own a 88 targa with a 930 motor. I purchased it with the understanding I would break even.

Fortunately I do better on my other investments

My prediction is this: aircooled 911s years '74-'89 will all settle at the same price point in 5 years. However, the 964 and 993 will be valued at about 10-20% higher, based on modern creature comforts, power and speed...yet still aircooled.

Perhaps the good ole days will return at some point where the message boards go back to discussions on driving, maintaining, horse trading these great cars. I'm a capitalist pig, but even I get tired of people looking for the right car for major appreciation. Yes trader220, someone should create a derivatives market on the car market. I would buy puts with both hands on the air cooled market. Tens of thousands of these cars made. The average air cooled is NOT a rare car. Rare cars IMO are the rsk's, and 550's of the 1950's. Next recession, and there will be one after the next election, I see a big sale coming up. Again IMO

Guess that means the hood I snagged last week is pretty cool, off of 550A-0114. Now I just need to hurry up and finish the rest of the body.

I just picked up a Dark Blue 968 with the M030. Fordahl Motorsports set the car up and Bill Radar went thru the transmission. I see why the 968 is on that list .
