Careful this 911 is not as represented
Posting Details: https://chicago.craigslist.org/nwi/cto/d/merrillville-1974-porsche-911-carrera/6950682796.html
Shared via Daily Classifieds https://s57d9.app.goo.gl/NSef I know this car well as I put it back together from a basket case for someone on a very limited budget. This is being sold by a flipper which is fine but he doesn't know the whole story. You can also search my posts for the posts on this car. |
Obviously it is a standard 911, not a Carrera or a S based on the 911410xxxx VIN and the absence of rear flares.
|
74 would not have flares regardless.. It does S brakes though.
|
The Craigslist add itself throws up enough red flags. Thanks for alerting the community, though.

trainwreck for $30K? caveat emptor!
|
That’s the worst paint job ever! Check out how the light reflects off the hood. Wtf.

That ad screams scam. Stories about friends and mechanics, awful grammar. All that's missing is how the seller is deployed in Afghanistan and needs to sell to pay for his mom's kidney operation.
If you peruse CL ads long enough, you can spot the scams a mile away. This one can be spotted from 3 miles away :) |
Priced $8-10k too high. Assuming no rust, this could be a good car for someone on a $30k 911 budget. Assume $20-22k purchase price for a running/driving car with no major structural rust and have $8-10k leftover to keep it running. It will never be a nice car but it could be a good starter air cooled 911 for someone.

So some insight on this as it sat in my shop for about a year. Paint is trashed.. Windshield needs to come out for rust repair. Underside is very solid. Has brand new ssi's , dansk muffler, clutch, cis all rebuilt, fresh alternator, new Magna cores, msd and that's it.. Engine sat outside for 8 years or so on engine stand with tarp over it.. Runs surprisingly well.. Needs so much cosmetic TLC.. Brakes and suspension were never touched.. Engine was not rebuilt nor trans..

It's not a carrera - plain 911

Someone completely uneducated about porsche will buy this.. The best part is I contacted the seller to tell him I knew the truth about the car and he said he also had a 75 911 and a 356 for sale and is well versed in porsche..
|
This was being sold a few weeks ago for $22,000. A buddy contacted me about it, and the seller was a friend of the deceased guy who restored it. It was left outside for years with the motor out, and the previous owner rebuilt the motor and put it back together. It has a lot of cosmetic issues, and the motor has no documentation. It could have been a good car for $20k, but honestly, there's a lot of risk here. It needs paint. If the engine needs anything, you'll be underwater pretty quickly.

Your misunderstanding this. I am the guy that put it back together.. The Engine is NOT rebuilt nor ever has been |
Aren't you dead?
|
Lol so here is the story..
The orginal owner took this car apart in his yard(grass and trees) and put the engine on a stand under a tarp. He then bought 2k worth of rennline trim parts and 3k worth of exhaust and another 1k worth of tune up and cos parts.. He then dies. His life long friend buys the car to put it back together as a tribute to his friend but knows nothing about Porsches He then finds me from a friend of a friend and I agree to assemble it for him as I get suckered into the sad story and he trades me a gold cart and a small amount of money to do it.. I pick away at it for 9 months and then get it running. He takes it home and then wants additional work done but I tell him no as I don't have time.. He brings it to another guy to do a few small things and I believe he decided to remove the msd box as he has an ignitor which I suggest he not do.. Then he decides he doesnt like 911s so then puts it for sale for the last year to only people that don't flip it.. No luck so he advertises it for more Money knowing he will get a flipper and sells it approximately 1 week ago.. And now that is the entire story. |
Oh and the engine sat outside for 6-8 years on a stand under a tarp..

Sorry golf cart.. He was only trying to sell word of mouth to people that would promise not to sell it.. It didn't work so then he opened the flood gates.
|
It was listed for 22k a week ago.
|
Yes it was but I was still offered it for much less at the same time.. I passed as the paint is so bad and some pretty good surface rust going on around the windshield and passenger door that I opted out already have a 914 with those issues.

Anthony not sure if that was directed at me? We have met infact years ago was at your house.. Please read my response.. The car was not advertised until a few weeks ago at 22k .. The owner wanted to try to sell it to someone local that would carry on his friends dream.
|
Just amazing how some sellers get off track and history's evolve. I attribute it to the loooong winters.:) Good of you to sort out the facts so a buyer will know what it really is. I have a Porsche project you might be interested in working with. Are you the person who worked with Brian @ Rarly8? arotheray@wi.rr.com
