Two Benchmark Prices

For those who watch prices, I recently completed two transactions and thought I'd post the results. FWIW:

SOLD: Mint '65 356C, CA entire life, never rusted, one repaint, completely rebuilt in 1986 and then stored properly for thirty years. Non-matching engine number, correct sequence and year, 1720cc. Color change from Signal to Ruby w black vinyl, chrome wheels, 125,000 mi. SOLD for $80,000 (Hemmings.)

BOUGHT: Good 1980 Targa SC, 115,000mi, original, TX and MT car with no rust, always garaged. New leather seat covers and velour carpet. Good top. Guards Red and Targa top probably kept value down, but I wanted a Targa and Guards Red is OK by me. BOUGHT for $29,500.

What I find interesting is the value of the '65; while nearly flawless it was driven, a lot, and the mismatched numbers couldn't have helped. Also interesting, it seems that a-c 911 prices are in the summer doldrums; fleabay asking prices and classified ads are still unrealistic but what are the cars selling for, if at all? (BaT.)

The everything bubble has popped. Stocks, housing, and yes German toys for middle aged guys :)
And guards red is only a 4 letter word on sites like this where the purists have to purist. In the real world, people love that color.

Red tends to be the kiss of death for a 356. I can usually count on getting 10% less for a car if it's red, compared to other 356 colors. Back in the 80's everyone painted them red, but now everyone wants to go back to the blues, silvers, and greens. This pic is a case in point, all these cars are rare colors, but are also painted red, because the 80s...

I don't know, the Ruby is a beautiful shade of red. Signal not so much. Regarding Guards, I know its a cliche but the car was solid, lower miles, updates, straight. I may have bough it despite the color! Anyway, what's old is new again and maybe buyers will come around to it (again.)

I spent 10 years hating the red, it's now silver.

That sounds miserable, spending 10 years w a car whose color you hated. Well, I guess you got around to it, but ten years?

Well, many times the cars find us, so you can't always pick the color. Ruby Red was the original color so I agonized about changing it but finally decided it's not a matching numbers car and I don't plan on ever selling it, so I painted it the color I wanted. But I never liked the red, but I really like the silver, so I think I made the right call. Decades from now someone else will own the car and they can wonder what I was thinking!

I’ve bought lots of cars right place, right price, wrong color. Sometimes you get around to painting them, sometimes you sell them on.

That's what makes a market, I wouldn't have my 356a in any color but ruby red. Makes my guards red 911 look orange, when side by side. And the 550-054 you mentioned , that's one off from James Deans spyder. Took James Deans cousin for a ride in my A, cool guy!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1565916815.JPG
