Sell for Parts or Sell whole car?
I recently totaled my 84 Carrera. Was hit in the front left. I just finished negotiating with the insurance company to keep the car. I have no intentions of trying to repair it to get it back on the road from a time and cost perspective.
My question is, should I try and part it out or sell the whole car as a salvaged wreck. The engine, transaxel and wheels are in great shape and were unaffected by the crash. Thanks. Mike ![]()

I don’t follow. If you have no intentions of repairing it, then why didn’t you just let them total it and cash you out? Sounds like a lot of work if you’re trying to squeeze a lil more money out of it. This is why agreed values are best, so that when you total it they pay you an amount that you’re totally happy walking away with. Where you can say good riddance to it, and not be left with a wreck to part out.

I assume the OP figured he could buy back from the insurance company and be way ahead, selling the totaled car as a donor or project... or part out and profit from it.
I would suggest it depends on how much time, energy and tolerance you have for the effort involved in pulling parts and selling them. My guess is you would make a fair bit more parting the car, but you will invest a significant amount of time doing that. With that said, the damage does not look super bad, and it may be a candidate for rebuilding into a daily or track car. You may find someone willing to pay you good money as is...

I’ve got a buddy that totaled his 930 almost a year ago, and he’s still fighting with his insurance company to get fairly compensated for it. They won’t pay him full value to fix it due to them determining that it’s been ‘totaled’, and they also won’t pay him nearly what it’s worth to cash out. If you don’t have an agreed value, you won’t be able to come to an agreement that makes you happy when you need to use it (the insurance policy). That’s my two cents. If you don’t have an agreed value, you’re left with a scenario like this one.

Fixable..... shame they totaled it......
Selling as whole with branded title is going to create a buyer discount. Parting out will gross more overall dollars but unless this is your job a ton of work; I would think you will net less or about the same. Make sure the frame is straight, Fix it, document the hell out of it and sell or enjoy.

Would fixing it be less work than parting it out ?

Mike sorry to see the damage.
Try to sell it whole first. If you can't make the money you want from selling it whole, part it out however once you sell off the in demand parts (engine/trans/wheels and a few others) don't count on getting a lot for the rest quickly. If you don't have indoor storage, parts turn crappy pretty quick, if you do you are tying up valuable space. Five years from now you will be wondering what to do with all the "valuable" parts that didn't sell that are tying up your indoor space .

Let me explain a little more. In negotiation with the insurance company it got to the point that I said I was going to file a claim with the state insurance department and contact an attorney. One of the agreements was to let me keep the salvage car for no cost.
The transaxle has been completely refreshed by Wes Montieth and Patrick Motor Sports. I have fantastic dyno results from the engine which has 155k miles: I has the DME upgraded to an 89 chip by Loren, I have a custom SS mandrel bent exhaust (1 in 2 out) and the chomed Fuchs are in great shape with Bridgestone RE 11A’s I have all the maintenance records for the last 15 years since I’ve owned it. I would sell the whole car for 10k Mike Last edited by ausgezeichnet; 08-24-2019 at 09:57 AM.. |

The entire car is worth an absolute minimum of $15k; you could probably even get someone to pay $18-20k. If you are looking to avoid a headache, put it up on Pelican and say you'll give it up for $15k so long as someone arrives at your doorstep and takes the car away. It'll be gone in a a week or less. |

IF you sell for $10k, you are handing the guy that buys it $5K gift minimum. You could sell the engine and trans for that!
Not a chance I would sell that car for $10k! Ask $20k and work down from there.... David

Start at $20k. You can negotiate if need be.
