My wife doesn't want me to sell - 1972 911T targa

I am in the process of selling my 1972 911T targa. While I love the car and she has been great to me over the past 15+ years, I just don't have the time and patience. I have two other old cars, one being a 1968 Corvette that my dad had bought new that I can't sell even though it isn't nearly as fun to drive. All of three of them, plus two daily vehicles, adds up to a lot of time/work/money.

I have a very interested buyer. The price is right. I don't really need the money but it would help make life easier. I would likely buy another car but one with good A/C.

The issue is that my lady really wants me to keep the car. We go for bi-weekly drives in it during the nicer weather months. However, she won't be a passenger in the 911 on the highway so that really limits the drives to local destinations. She also likes to drive ithe car (occasionally and only when I'm in the car). She is upset over the fact that I'm preparing to sell the 911.

Thoughts?

FYI, The 911 is almost completely stock and is matching numbers. It originally had factory AC which likely never worked well. Right now, it doesn't have a working cabin fan (working on it) or heat (I disconnected the cable to the flapper boxes as heat was leaking into the cabin during the summer months).

Get with Rawknees. He will help you install a modernized working AC solution. Then keep it.

This car will likely never have good AC. It has both battery boxes in rust-free condition (and two batteries) which limits AC solutions. Plus the 2.4L engine and alternator can't easily handle the AC loads.

You’ve made up your mind. Sell the car and deal with the marital repercussions. Maybe take the money and buy her a newer targa then.

Valium or CBD oil would likely be more effective. Helmets are scary and don't promote feelings of safety.

For me, I usually do a project or two a year on the car. It is a huge time commitment. This year's project is the interior as some of the vinyl is damaged or showing its age.

It's unusual for the wife to want to keep a car and the husband wanting to sell. But it's you who maintains it and puts in all the time. Delicate dance my friend.

How about you guys go test drive a Cayman, a 997 or a 991? Maybe she can be assuaged with a car that requires less maintenance? You're going to ring the register pretty well with the 72. What about taking the money and buying a newer, used Porsche?

There are some awesome cars out there.

Just one suggestion.

Drive faster on a couple of those bi-weekly drives.

It does appear to be a pretty nice condition little car. Might even be able to swing a 991 Targa with the money he could get for it.

None of that would be a problem for building ballfreezing a/c; fanned, serpentine or micro channel condenser(s) can go in left rear wheel well (wouldn't even need to put one on engine grill opening), the compressor load would be a non-issue with a common rotary compressor that only uses about 4-7hp at peak operation, and the alternator could be replaced for a 90A version, if needed (not likely, as the condenser and evaporator fans do not draw much current, and neither does the compressor clutch).

^^^You do realize normal folks don't drive a 40 year old 911 in 108 degree weather.

Yeah, OP, something like this should do the trick...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqv7rVZTTSc

What's that ? Nothing but a "belch of flame from the exhaust" LOL, that's no turbo.

It doesn't need to be 108 outside in order to enjoy the ballfreeze, pNutz - a well built 911 system can be run at any temp (say, anything above 70, or even lower if humidity is high) and then barely has to do anything in order to chill and dehumidify the cabin.

Is your Targa still rocking the original, "cools well in cold climates" system? If so, why not mod that bisch and motor in comfort?!?!?! No balls, or bowels , for such things?!?!?!

Over here, that's called fresh air.

Targa's are no fun with the top on unless you like the sounds of riding in a rickety cart inside a wind tunnel !

Coldstart, Why doesn't she like riding on the highway? Is it safety? Comfort? I think your way ahead depends on what it takes to make her happy.

Riding with your lady with the top off is kind of the dream. Hate to lose that.

You know why I kept the hardtop when I sold my targa last month? Because with it on it almost “sounds” like riding in a normal car.
