Iconic Autobody - new turnkey Porsche on the block

This new body version of the 356 has just turned up in the UK.

It seems to be a turnkey car based on a boxster. It’s not meant to be a replica, more of a reinvention of the original but suited for today’s roads. I guess like the new mini, beetle and Fiat 500.

Having had two 356 reps myself (Intermeccanica speedster and JPS Coupe) this can only be a good thing. Sitting white knuckled doing 65 on a freeway, holding everyone up in my replica - while people scream by drinking coffee and talking on phones is something I quickly learned wasn’t ideal!

I really quite like this new version. Seems much better proportioned than the Starkie version. Wonder if they will make it available over here in the US?

I understand that the owner used to make cars for Top Gears roadshow. They made a 360 Ferrari replica that they could slide around on their stage!

From the number plate, that car is a 2.7 Boxster but I’m guessing a 3.2 is where it’s at!

The boxster wheel base is a good bit bigger than a 356 - but again, I’m guessing that can’t hurt for road manners.

That's a great looking car. I like the angle of the windshield, looks like it has front right oil cooler. Boxster chassis wouldn't be bad as you can get them fairly reasonable, decent brakes etc. .

i'm not so sure about this one. ...it kind of looks like it needs an epi pen or at least some Benadryl from some kind of allergic reaction to something.

My only real ding on it is the wheels. Needs some magnesium wheels with an old steel wheels look yo them.

The fake rear brake vents don’t work for me, other than that it’s fairly decent. Those should either be removed altogether, or real brake vent openings.

I think the rear vents are for the engine cooling as it’s a midmount Boxster under there.

Not sure why the front bumper has the slots in it though. I’m not too keen on the whitewalls either.

I wouldn’t mind owning one though! Wonder what it has for a roof?

Front bumper has slots for the radiators. The rear fender ones are air intake. But the coolant is up front.

It's so busy, too many details. This is so far away from the original ethos of the speedster. Yuk.

Are those rear vents actual openings? They look fake to me.

Looks like the drivers side bumper also has openings - My guess is for the money this would cost to build....all things equal, would spend my money on something else.

It looks 'modern', and not in a good way.

I think I would like it, without the intakes. But I wouldn't spend the money on a boxster kit.

That is so cheeseball when TT owners do this to their car. It's like making a Fiero into a Testarossa. And that's coming from a TT owner. Hilarious.

That's in Russia. It is probably titled as a BMW 850i as well. The amount of cars that are stolen in Europe and driven there and registered as another car is quite shocking. I remember talking to some guy in Mongolia who stole a brand new Land Rover in Spain and drove it all the way through Russia. It was hilarious to me because the customs gave him the greenlight all the way through - not to mention I had just seen the new model a couple weeks prior in an auto magazine. Now there it was with Russian plates in the middle of a dirt field...

Picked up another couple of pics of the car - though I think they are CAD generated.

Absolutely! The rise in CAD has changed the face of the design and development significantly.

I quite like it. Assuming it could get out of its own way that is.
