Have I lost touch or is this car wildly over-priced?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/1103306-f-s-88-911-w-rebuilt-3-6l-g50.html

Is this the new normal?

Just me, but I absolutely hate the seats -- Ugle! It's not original but hey, it's got a 3.6 and of course a G-50. All the mods are cool. Is that really marine blue? I'm no expert, but who would pay this price for it as is? For that money one gets much more I'd think!

Yes....

Last week a modified 72 3.4L T sold on PCar Auctions for $300,000
https://www.pcarmarket.com/auction/1972-porsche-911t-2/

My past experience was a modified car would sell for a percentage of cost of build.

Now it appears the marketplace values all the expense of building a modified 911. My 86 Carrera has close to $80,000 spent on its purchase, modifications and upgrades. To make it as nice as the cited 911 it would need minor bodywork and paint which is easily another $25,000. I do not know if that means I would get $105,000 but it would be a legitimate cost of the build.

So given the 72 sale, my own 86 expenditures and a knowledgeable buyer who that car speaks to; it has to be considered a reasonable asking price.

Fair enough logic Macroni! So you dump 25k into your car, you'll get just under what this guy is asking? I've seen your car and as said it looks tight! Your seats must be more handsome than these for sure. You may even do better if you were to sell.

And the seller paid $112K for it on BAT back in 2018.

Yikes! I'm a diehard air cooled nut but not at that price. No way!

The '88 I referenced is a nice car but doesn't tick the boxes for me. ...seems overpriced as well. I think that of a lot of the cars from the seller of the '88 as a matter of fact.

It all depends on your objectives and pocket. If the build is similar to what you want, if you do it yourself it will take a year and cost you more. Its easy to spend 60-100k on these cars to get them to the state desired. Again it goes back to what you want.

Is the price worth it, yep to someone. As Macroni above stated, that price is close to what it would take to buy a reasonable condition car and do most of those mods. The only difference is if you did it yourself, you would know for sure what went into it. In this case, you are taking the person's word and maybe a few receipts.

I know I have more than that in my car, and I wouldn't pay that much for one...

Yes you have seemed to have lost touch with the current market!
We seem get those prices!
We built it at Air Cooled Classics a well known and reputable Porsche innovator builder.

Rebuilt G50 , 3.6 lump as well as lighter G body chassis with recent paint adds up to a quick very maneuverable ride which can command higher prices these days as is everything it seems , would I buy it hell no will someone just into the hobby and market place ? More than likely ..
Is it slightly higher priced hell yes , maybe a good cushion for reasonable negotiation ...JMHO..

Red 84 Carrera Coupe just sold for $96K on BAT

Prior owner put $60K into it for a motor rebuild and other work with Porsche Classic in GA.

Yes, this is the new norm. SC’s and 80’s 911s have been under-valued (IMO) for too long. Nice build and BLWS.

I have known Don for decades, and seen many of his builds in person and on the track. He does high quality work and you might even say a pioneer in backdating later 911s.
If I had the cash, I'd be sending my cars to Don to build.
Early Adopter: This backdated 964 C4 was built in the mid-2000s — RETROMOD
Mind you, I did rag him about the mirrors, but that is what the customer wanted.
