Need money, but is this a no brainer?

I'm trying to raise money for BTR engine rebuild, putting things up for sale as such (no gauges). One idea that crossed my mind was my 964 RS aluminum bonnet, IF I could get 5K in this market in Japan which is doubtful.

On one hand it is not original to the 89' Ruf BTR III. It's just a part that I acquired almost 20 years ago to make it more hot rod if you will. Moreover, it was painted then with the whole car when I had it stripped down and resprayed. It's good to go. If I sold it I'd have to buy a steel bonnet and have that painted which might cost 1 or 1.5 K perhaps.

On the other hand, one could rationalize thinking that pure restoration means original. In the event of resale value, which choice would benefit? One concluding thought is about weight. The Ruf Speedline wheels are heavy everyone knows, and my car is a cab (little heavier?). M2 joked about a car taking flight on a recent Ruf wheel value thread. No danger of that I would guess by keeping the alloy bonnet. If you were in my shoes, what would you choose to do, keep it or make some money?

Thanks for any feedback!

If I were trying to do a faithful restoration AND I was trying to free up some cash, I'd sell it.

Thanks BLACK3.2! I'll consider that. It dawned on me today that I have planned to use a new 964 turbo factory intercooler PO bought for this engine which is all still in Europe. I sold off my BTR intercooler about 20 years ago. He said the other night on the phone he paid nearly 4K for it and planned to use it. He said it's a nice piece of hardware and that Ruf used them on their RTC model cars. Since I don't have my original intercooler I will definitely go with that for the time being. So I'm already fudging on originality. Do you think a future buyer would fuss if the car had an RS 964 alloy bonnet? Would they think, no biggie, we can always replace it with a steel one?! Even if I sold it, net profit might only be 3.5 K in the long term. I can borrow the money I need from my daughters college fund as long as I pay it back over time which I can by selling other things.

Sell the early one on the sporto.

"I can borrow the money I need from my daughters college fund as long as I pay it back over time which I can by selling other things."

If you cannot pay cash for whatever is needed then you cannot afford it - sell the alloy bonnet and any other extra parts you can before borrowing against your daughters future.

Good advice.

OK, so with the caveat that I am the kind of guy that doesn't mind hotrodded cars, but at the same time I do like a good time capsule, here's what I think: If I were a buyer, I would consider an RS alloy bonnet to be a bonus and I would not ding it for being unoriginal. At the same time, I would not EXPECT there to be an RS alloy bonnet there. I can't imagine 3.5K will factor into the final purchase price for such a high dollar collectible. I think that's 3.5K you can free up and it won't hurt the value of the car in the least.

Got my best one of 3 early alloy deck lids on auction 2 days ago. Of the three, worst one is on the Spotro, but its not that bad. Weak market, weak economy, but one at a time and see how we go. Raising money is not easy in a weak economy, weak market for Porsche vintage cars or parts.

I agree with you and so does my wife, does that say anything? Still, this the year I'm acquiring a Ruf BTR motor and the timing is ripe. I have a couple cars and some nice parts I can sell over time. However, it takes time to do that when things are a little tight, saying robbing Peter to pay Paul for instance. M2 told me to beg, borrow and steal to get the job done. Hopefully I won't be hurting my little girl's future if I get this car finished out. She still has a few years before college. I think I can pay back the money in time, All I have to do is sell 1 of 2 extra cars and that will be done.

Regards for the excellent insight! You are more right than wrong, and I feel bad about borrowing from my only daughter. Permission from wife helps!

Thanks BLACK3.2 for all the personal insights! It's very helpful for me to hear your ideas. You can read my mind on both sides of the spectrum and I appreciate all your advice. I will keep thinking through the options and hopefully come to a decision soon. For now I will leave it to rest and keep thinking... Ultimately it's a decision I will have to make myself.

Best,
bernie

pmax, you've been trolling my threads for a few years now (and other's). I told you then that if you continue to do so I'd cut your balls off! Since you don't have any to begin with, I've changed my strategy. I think I will PM an Administrator and ask for you to be canned (banned) for a good three months. How does that sound? Got three months to troll on some other forum?

I don't know if you are specifically talking about Bernz, or generalizing, but the no cash means you can't afford it deal does not work for me - I have financed many things, including a house, street motorcycle, racing motorcycle and a classic car and have afforded it all just fine, including paying everything off in about one third of the time alloyed (except the house, which I am still paying on). I'm sure there are many that do the same, without issue.

Bernz, why so sensitive about a joke? I don't get it, bro.

you know how seanie-max does not know when to get off something he sees as funny raw. his bumping of old threads being one example. I love me some max, but he can drive a good thing into the ground in a matter of minutes, then ride it for another two months.

Understood, Tobz, it's just that forum stuff like that doesn't bother me at all (too pimp, of course). Only thing that ever bothers me is forum nannyism form the Silent Puritans (credit M2 for that boss term!), and those bisches rarly surface.

Haha but hey, give credit where credit's due (M2 started that PP meme, not me !).

But yes, point taken, time to give the RUF gauge one a rest ..... if only Raw' could cooperate for a change. CC however lives forever by sheer popular demand !

I told Raw not to give him that many blue pills. Too much and you’ll never come down.

pNutz has such an appetite for Blue Bombers that I've had to lease an additional warehouse just to keep those bisches in stock!
