Fair price for '68S coupe project?
Anyone want to weigh in on what a fair price for a '68S coupe?
Background: needs complete restoration, been outside not driving for 20+ years, current state of rust unknown but could need entire slick top replacement and more one the lower body, matching engine, non-matching trans, looks to be complete otherwise, no documentation other than kardex. |

Very difficult to determine without any pictures. Search the forum for what some cars have sold for and compare your car to them. Keep in mind that rust repair and engine rebuilds are VERY expensive. If it’s your car- you can either post with a price that you’re happy with and a “or best offer” and see what the offers are, or you can auction it off on sites like eBay etc.
Depending on where you live- rust can eat up the car. Hopefully you live in a dry climate. Good luck |

Ya I understand there are wide ranges based on car specifics. Just trying to get a gut feel. I have a price tracker I made to follow the 67 and 68S but the prices for similar cars are way too high in terms of asking price. For example a 67S coupe that needs complete restoration asking 65k when cars on BAT recently only got bid to 100k?

The Porsche market is nuts. If you price too high- the market will let you know, too low and you get some money. It’s hard to let go sometimes when you are trying to maximize your profit. Sometimes it’s just good to sell and move on. Best of luck to you.

Druepy, pics tell all. It sounds like this car needs $70K+ in restoration, and the 68S, for some reason, doesn't bring the same money as the 67S. so it may be that the car is only worth $30-35K as it sits. But again, pics can change that number...

Concerning this car, pics are the bare minimum you need to get a valuation. ---Adam

The early 68S with the sand cast engine case is worth more than the later mag. case 68S. The very rare Elephant hide interior 68S is worth more than the later ones, door panels are almost impossible to replace, so if they have speaker holes cut in them that would lower the value of the car maybe 4k. etc.
So pictures say a thousand words. The 67S does seems to bring a lot more than the 68S. There are many things I like more about the 67S over the 68S and vice a versa. They both are incredibly fun cars. Seems one of the reasons 68 US 911/912 have a lower value is because of the side marker lights and the air pumps. Of course no 68S had side marker light or a air pump as they were never officially imported to the US. But people can not seem to understand that distinction. |

FWIW a couple of years ago I sold a TOTAL basket case 67s shell only for $18k. Pretty sure they bought it for the vin only.

I’ve seen worse. It looks all there, including the original carbs.

It’s fibergkass. Part of a “conversion” piece sold along with the rear reflector. It fits between the original bumperettes.

You can buy a replacement bumper panel for cheap.
Looks like California desert weather has limited the rust damage on it after twenty years. |

These cars rust like crazy. The whole bottom rusts. If the car is in California now, it doesn’t mean that it didn’t spend time somewhere else. The only way to know is to get under the car and under the carpets to look. Is the engine seized? Everything will have to be rebuilt. It will be a lot of work (rewarding work) if you want to do it yourself, but it will be expensive....but I think you know that already. Excited for you man- good luck
