Boredom at it's best, what will you sit on, for quite a while?

Market is nowhere where it used to be, nor will it be for a long while. You don't wanna sell, you don't have to, so what are you sitting on that you have to keep until things turn around, and they always do.

Mine is a 69E Sporto. NOT my baby, but now is the time to hold, if one doesn't have to sell. Not talking about your baby per say, just the can you'll be sitting on for a while.

I'm hoping to start selling again in July or August, if it isn't working then well, we are looking at next Spring. The yard is full, so I'm hoping for Fall.

So I've had my C43 AMG for over a decade, love it, crazy fast (over 300 horses, even Ronny can respect that), handles great, a wonderful car, I'm the 2nd owner, all records since new. But it's an automatic, which was the only way BENZ built them. Several years ago I asked my mechanic if we could swap a stick shift in, he looked into it and said it can't be done. I then checked with Mercedes, they said, can't be done. Ok, I can live with the automatic. So then I'm on one of the BENZ forums and this crazy Armenian dude in LA is showing his C43 with a 6 speed gearbox!!! He driving around in it. I asked him if he wants to sell it, he says yes, he's about to get married and needs cash. I look at where he lives and it's about a miles from Rod Emory's place, so Rod says it cool to drop it there to get picked up by my transporter. So I buy the silver car, take it to my mechanic and say, gut the silver car and put everything in the black car. It's almost finished, then a friend says he wants the silver car, because it came with an extra 6 speed gearbox, so he'll out that one in.
So never say never!

I'm going to set on my portfolio for a while. Good thing I only have 10% in the stupid market.

I know of one person that will have to postpone retirement because of this. He was finishing his final project in June. He contacted the owners a week after the market tanked and scheduled one more project to manage.

Agree. But most people are greedy first and intelligent second. When the market is kicking azz they never sell.
They wait until it's back to where they started or worse.

right. I don't have to draw from my IRA (with fidelity) until im 70, another 16 years if I make it that long so where should I put it? in a CD, a low interest savings account? with the last couple week's "uptick" im sitting about 15% down and Im letting it ride at this point hoping for a recovery.

Is this a serious question? While the historically low interest rates have changed how one mixes their investments, someone planning to retire this year shouldn't have more than 1/3 of their money in the stock market.

I know some have gone deeper in recent years because bonds aren't yielding, but I would rather hold a 1% bond for ten years and hope that interest rates don't stay low forever than risk taking a bath like many people have in this current situation.

A lot of it depends on the age of the person too. A 55yo Toby has more time to recover than my 70yo mother. He can afford to stay in the market longer because he's got more time.

Yes, but (forget the coronavirus for a second) if you're mom's 70 years old, her life expectancy is still well over ten years. While I'll agree that you shouldn't have as aggressive an asset mix as if you're 30, most people get waaaay too conservative when they get older.

As much as you can, set it and forget it.

As much as you can, set it and forget it.

I should clarify that when I said not be in the market, I mean not buying a bunch of individual stocks. I favor moving more to a fund and letting a mix of investments managed by a firm. And that’s a set it and forget it, as you said.

Some people have the time and inclination to analyze the market and pick winners and losers. I don’t think that’s most people.

Of course it's a serious question. When you get to be my age, the portfolio becomes deadly (oops, bad pun) serious.

Mocker has it partially correct. I've got to not only estimate my own life expectancy relative to the portfolio, but my wife's as well, not to even mention SS's contribution. I've never been one to shy away from the market, but I've never been too aggressive either. In my 35-40 years of investing I've learned one thing: NOTHING beats the market long term. Nothing. Just ask Warren (or do your homework).

Capital preservation is all well and good, especially if you divide your portfolio by what you need to live on annually for the longest period of the total life expectancy. But if that's longer than 7-10 years collectively, meaning you OR your spouse are expected to live longer than that, the old 100 minus your age=bonds versus stock mix is bull.

I'm more like exactly the opposite that ratio. These crashes happen pretty regularly and have always recovered. If you have just enough to make it to the projected end, invest very conservatively. If you can afford otherwise or more, have at it. Your children and spouse will thank you.

Im with Nick on this one, most people end up way too conservative as they approach retirement. The market wins long term. People bragging about only having a small portion in the market just make me chuckle. Ya they missed the drop, I bet they missed the bull market too, and will miss the next one. Keep investing in index funds as scheduled.
