Wtb ad- scams :(

see attached photo...

This guy PM’d me in regards to my WTB ad in the 944 section.. said he knew someone..

Emailed him, went back and forth and he totally spoke legit.. emailed today to ask for tracking number then he said no he’s having issues with his Venmo, send money cash app.. hmmmm. Went to my Venmo and I had some messages from another user asking if I was burned by this guy. DAMMIT! I was taken for 250.00.. bastards.

The below are also scams, how do we report these users to have their accounts deleted.

Report the users to the moderators. It’s all you can really do. There are dozens of them all with the same MO.

Posts=0-5 in every case.
So they joined a car forum where they were looking at wtb ads to do you a favor.
Think about the likelihood of that for a second.

Seems legit.

WTB Scammer

I got this PM on my WTB ad from a Davidmolz who joined yesterday and sent me a message that said:

Contact Lunceford he has Smart String Alignment setup for sale, his email luncefordhadley50@gmail.com

I googled both the name and email he gave me and found the same exact name and email scamming a WTB ad on a Jeep Forum.

Beware!!

Remember not to trust everyone on the Interwebs.

This is the 2nd time I've heard someone say, "I paid with Venmo" and got screwed. Why would you pay with a service with no recourse?

Wait until I tell my Nigerian Prince friend about this. He'll get a kick out of it.

John Schiavone 04-30-2020 11:16 AM

Just got scammed myself today.

Anthony0099 tells me jackalex0099@gmail.com he has the item I'm looking for for sale.

I contact him and several text messages later find out it's a scam. Only $70, made claim through PayPal. Each had no posts, and each just registered this month. My bad for not realizing there are so many d$%#bags trying to rip you off. The 0099 in both addresses should have tipped me off.

Don’t buy anything off Instagram. Cost me $50 to learn that. And PayPal won’t do s...t.
Venmo is only good between friends.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Couple things you can do if you are worried about a scam.
1. Have some take a pic of themselves or your name with the car, I have people ask me to do weird stuff like this all the time, if the person is real and the part is real they will do it.
2. Ask for a pic that a scammer would have, like under the dash, or a closeup of something. Again if someone tells you they don't have time, it's a scam.
3. Ask to call and talk to them, most real people will say ok. Again, I talk to people all the time when I'm selling something, they just want to know someone is real.

Be careful out there.

This guy asked me to take a pic of myself with the car and give it a thumbs up! If someone wants your money, make them work a little.

what, the one in the tech forum currently and the other three in the last couple weeks are not enough?

frankly im tired of these posts. ive been around here longer than most so maybe I see more clearly that a recently registered member with a low post count is one NOT to deal with. I don't have spidy sense or anything, just a bit of common sense and a healthy skepticism that everyone is out to fuch me unless proven otherwise.

I was referring to the post with the members name for us to ban. All the mods are well versed in who to deal with and who to skip over. We monitor the forums as best as we can but appreciate when members point out potential sketchy people for us.

I should have known better, been around a while myself, but just couldn't imagine someone would go through so much effort to steal, in my case, $70. Things must be getting rough out there!

Those are the most effective scams. It takes a lot of effort to scam someone out of thousands of dollars. And you have to have a really stupid mark to get them to send you that much money. But $50 or $70, people are willing to send that off to a total stranger without too much hesitation. And it's not like the FBI is going to investigate over $70.

It's really not a lot of effort from the scammer's part. Probably worked less than an hour to make that tax free $70. That's the equivalent of a $180K a year salary, when accounting for taxes paid. And given the scammer is most likely in Bulgaria or Ukraine or whatever, that $70 is week's worth of income for the average person.

im sorry you were taken for $$. ive done thousands of dollars of business here through the classifieds buying and selling parts over the years and never been scammed with a bit of due diligence. ive not always been happy with the product shipped as it was not as described, but that's a shame on them. most have made things right (except tom1394racing) as ive attempted to do when a buyer was unhappy with what ive sold.

my last sentence was a useful PSA for those paying attention.
