Steel or Fiberglass Body Work?
I read through a couple of the old threads here and instead of digging up a 5 year old post figured I'd start again.
I'm planning building a restomod 73 RSR tribute car with a friend. He's pretty keen on using Getty's FRP or carbon(his preferred option) for all the bits; rear quarters, hood, duck tail, bumpers and even doors. I'm thinking more of a mix, using steel fender flares on aftermarket steel front fenders and welding on steel flares on the rear, using FRP bumpers and duck tail with either steel or glass hood, more like TRE offers. I would like to add value to the car, it will probably get sold after we had some fun with it and fund the next one. I'm not butchering a nice original car, that's why we started with a mid 80's ex-race car roller chassis. I feel it was a good candidate for this sort of build, gets a second chance at life. What do you think? Open to opinions from purists, enthusiasts, realists, haters and trolls. |

If the goal is to sell it, you need to use steel quarters and fenders. The market for fiberglass street cars is limited and will have a significant impact on overall value.

Wow, carbon fenders and doors. How much do they cost, like $20k each?

I priced up CF body work from Getty, about $12k for all the panels, including the doors. About half that for FRP. TREs kit starts at $10k plus the steel fender flares but that gets you almost everything to bolt on. Might save a few dollars piecing it together myself.
I agree with steel being the more sell able option, I can see having hood, duck tail and bumpers in FRP as that is a bit more common and acceptable, (other than maybe the hood) My friend thinks that carbon fiber adds a cool factor and therefor more value, I just think it’s cool and that’s it. |
