why are USED Fuchs so expensive?
 
Browsing for a pair of 16x9 ET15 Fuchs wheels. On ebay I'm seeing prices of $800-1000 EACH and up to $2500 a PAIR. WTF??

Maxilite has them for $580 a pair (I assume they are cast, not forged)

Can someone explain why asking prices are so astronomical for the older wheels?

Limited supply of quality FUCHs, not to mention few people who you can trust to restore them. All this equals high price for the real deal. New ones and fake ones are not the real deal.

And those “real deal” 16x9 were only two production year, rear of 88-89 930.

Has anyone bought a new set? 15s and 16s look the same as old ones to my eye. Weights look right. Forging description looks right. Is there a hidden difference?

(17, 18, and 19 have that funny looking center section, were never oem)

jmitro- if you don't need to date match your wheels, fuchsfelge looks like a very reasonable option, on par with refinished wheels, except with no concerns about cracking from previous use/abuse.

Matt Monson - Not really. I guess it’s just one of those things I won’t understand. I can afford them, but why?

Mixed76 - exactly. I’ve seen posts about concerns for wheel integrity so why would I pay MORE for older wheels when I can get brand new real Fuchs for a bit cheaper?

You wouldn’t pay more for them, and neither would I. But if I owned and was restoring an 88 930? A 100% original car is different than what most of us drive. That was the point of my comment.

Not only would I be perfectly happy with a Speedster rep, I’d put a Polo or a Subaru engine in it. Nobody would do that with a Speedster. Hell, some 356 owners were up in arms when knock off replicas became available. Others flocked to them just like 911 guys and rep wheels.

BTW, Fuchs is making these old wheels again. For someone who cares about the brand, you can buy “original” wheels if that’s your thing.

More 16X9 Fuchs trivia, DP had Fuchs make 16X9 Fuchs before Porsche.

Are these Fuchs worth more to me than others? not really but it is cool history.

I would not have bought 15” wheels ,two years ago, that need to be refinished for my 911R project if my crystal ball wasn’t broken.

Are the DP wheels the same offset as a "regular" 16X9 fuchs ?

keep in mind the very limited tire availability in the 245/45-16 tire size required for 16x9 fuchs on our cars --

No idea if this is the real deal or not, but a guy in Lincoln has a set of 906 steels for sale for a cool $13k.
This is from his ad:
This is a set of 100% original Porsche 906 alloy rim, steel center, riveted wheels, 7Kx15". All wheels are in excellent condition with no issues whatsoever. Porsche produced some 60 906 race cars,.......so do the math. 906 cars ran sevens on front and nines on the rear. These wheels would be very cool on an early 911 hotrod!

And I thought getting matching year Fuchs was an expensive hobby!

Yes, Fuchs just made them the same wheel when the made them for Porsche. So other than the fact they are older than any Porsche wheel of that size and the stamping, they are the same.
The cool factor is really just academic, history is fun though.

I agree it makes no sense. The only used Fuchs worth something more are the original ones the car came with.

Wheels are consumables. Good to know Fuchs has started making them again !

They’ve gone done in recent years, but back when I was at Carquip we used to sell these 917/RSR wheels for $4-5k a wheel.

Interesting my friend has been looking for a set of rears for his 935 for a while. I am sure he will pay up for them when he finds them.

I don't know about you guys but being in the casting business I am rarely impressed when I see a product made as much as I have been buy the videos of Fuchs alloys being made. They are IMO a work of art and probably one of the sturdiest and strongest wheels I have seen. Their process vs most others I have seen made is far ahead and worth paying for vs many of the replicas I see which are more machined than forged. I am assuming people don't realize that Fuchs is manufacturing these again and want the real deal vs a copy. Although i have no idea how they can sell them so cheap considering the work involved.

Rare wheels can cost a fortune. The speedlines on my 3.6T used to sell all day long for $4150 a set today good luck buying new for under $10k and I have seen people pay more for period correct date stamped wheels in perfect condition.

I have this set of 964 3.8 RSR speedlines 9 1/2 and 11" sizes that I have only seen another set sell. They went for 25k euro needing refinishing. Today I hear they can bring more to the right buyer. Same with cup I's. years ago I couldn't get rid of a set for more than $800 with tires, today I can sell a set for $3500 and have sold some sizes for over $4500 a set refinished.
