964 Cabs. What’s the market?
Are they $30, $40 or $50k cars?
My dealer friend says buy in the $20’s. But this isn’t 2008 anymore. Price for a 30,000 mile car...60,000.....90,000....???? ![]() |

I’ve always been a fan of a super beetle cab. Or better yet, give me a Thing.

The Thing
My friend Peter Dawe had Thing with Fat Performance shroud with 911 ALT.11 BLADE fan and a great motor he had built with a 5 speed 901 gearbox.Would lift the front wheels on the launch.I always wanted to build a mid-engine Thing with 300 hp 911 motor.Fred

I had a 73 super beetle that I eventually cut the roof off, does that count? even collapsed some when both doors were open and there were three of us in it onetime. the doors became very hard to shut from that day forward...

Took my cab out for a 600 mile drive today. Long but so satisfying.

also a big fan of cab's, mainly VW or Porsche and depending the climate you live in its a must have. To answer your question, price / mileage alone says not much, its condition, color combo, owner and records, records. For comparable manual cars a shocking 35% less than a Coupe and even Targa as they have low production #'s.

I might move on to a 993 Cab. I kinda like the earlier 911 bodies, headlights etc...

The fact is that 99% of 911 owners never approach the cars limits, or even close to the limits. The whole boy racer "coupes have stiffer chassis than Cabs" nonsense are people simply regurgitating seat of the pants observations by professionals from decades ago. They think they can feel it, but what they're really feeling is wind noise, creaks and rattles and maybe weight, if that. Besides, 99% of driving takes place on public roads, where only fools explore the limitations of cars.
Porsche addressed stiffening the Cab chassis decades ago. Besides, what could be more exciting than doing an AX in a 356 Cabriolet, body roll and all? If you're one of the experienced few that can actually detect the difference and can post faster times in an equalized coupe versus a cab, I applaud your talent. But for most people, it's simply a matter of personal taste wrapped up in boy racer buffoonery. I've bought and driven many Porsche Cabs (and one VW SuperBeetle). I love 'em. Nothing beats a summer night with the top down and the radio blasting out my favorite tunes.

It’s a perfect California car. I wouldn’t see it is well suited to NY.

Don't get me wrong, I had fun in that car. Owned it a long time and drove it all over the US. Even Mardi Gras! But it did nothing well. Slow, no power, lousy stereo, weak brakes, no passing, noisy, bad heat, useless defroster etc. Sure, I paid $3K for it, but it also rusted quickly. Admittedly I was young and stupid and didn't take care of it. Still, it was a lackluster car. Worse, I was coming out of a 912, so I was spoiled.
