930 Project On BAT

Hello everyone,

There is a 78 US 930 project on BAT. Any thoughts on what the value is on a non running US 930? Link below.

Thanks,
Daniel

The engine could be nothing and could be a mess.
That with a color change; I say $35k

Probably more than $35K. Motor work is a pleasure for some that have the skills and want a 930. Color change not that important to many not looking for a investment grade or garage queen. Lots of nice things about the car and how it evolved into a better driver ( to some ) than before when it was stock. Also from CA soooooo, that will also help get more interest on BAT

Paint to sample alone is worth something significant from a collectibility perspective. I think that this is a 50k car despite the color change.

How does someone keep a broken car parked for 20 years?
Either fix it or sell it.

For some it’s sentimental value. One thing for sure, had he sold it 10 years ago he would be getting a lot less money. So his patience may have paid off..lol

It’s a $60k car in running and DRIVING condition and this one could need significant work on the engine not even considering what else needs attention from sitting for so long.
I think $35k the way it sits is still a pretty risky proposition but hey I’m not buying it so what do I care what it sells for.
I’m sure I’ll just shake my head and smile
Good luck to whoever wins it.
Tony

Been watching this one as well.. so have a few buddies. My guess with them was 38k. Add in a conservative 20k engine rebuild number. Could have a running/driver 930 with a brand spanking new engine for under 60k. what's not to love?! Hope someone on pelican nabs it or a new member with a build page would be great!

Matt Monson 06-22-2020 09:21 AM

The get into it right price is $35-38k. I think some sucker on BaT is gonna pay close to $45k for it.

I guess, if your version of love is a beater with a new engine! Clearly, this car was already run hard and not taken care of before the engine seized, and the intervening years have done nothing to improve it.

IMO, it's either going to be a track car or stripped and converted to a wide-body hot rod. Any attempt to make this into a "nice" 930 (e.g., putting it back to original PTS, etc.) at this point would be a labor of love and a financial nightmare.

So a blow engine makes a 930 a beater?? Come on..

After watching that very nice early real 1982 RUF RNM @ $82,930 yesterday, it's hard to think they always over pay or are the last word in what some Porsche's are worth. Even after that dismal result I think this 78 will do better than some think.
I see lots of good mods and receipts from some of the best Porsche people so this guy was well connected when it was improved for better performance. As some have mentioned not a great candidate for someone who needs to pay a shop retail for repairs, ( like me ) that have commented, but still lots to like about it, even after non use for 20 years. The lack of quality detail when color changed not so good but not that hard to take care of.
Just getting a rebuild finished with all the usual rebuild parts plus addition of new Extreme recast heads, Pauter billet rods , 3.5 JE pistons & liners. Cost without labor $21K. If the damage is not as extensive as mine was or not going for the new 700+ HP stuff, the cost could be much less.

Not at all, but this car has way more issues than just a blown engine. If you buy it for $38k and spend another $25k to rebuild the engine, you're already over $60k and you haven't done anything to sort out the interior, suspension, fuel, brakes, A/C, electronics, and anything else that will need attention (it's been sitting for 20 years!). And it still has a crappy respray, so it will trade below the price of any 930 in similar condition that hasn't had a color change.

The more I look at it, the more I'm convinced it was previously used primarily as a track car--is there any other reason to have brake cooling ducts installed on a '78 930?

If you have the skill to do the work it could cost a good deal less, is my theme. Of course if you have to pay labor no good reason to pay much more than $35K for it. Re; brake ducts, a number of CA builders from that time have added brake ducts that I have had and were track used very little if any. Probably remembering the previous year 930 brakes were not up to the task for enthusiast driving use. Way more stuff needed just for longevity, to get from the back of the pack, even then. Actually I just read the long time owners response on BAT and he stated no track use or accident damage since new.

Recent comment on this car on BAT
"I couldn’t help but notice, probably a minor thing considering the car’s other faults but pic 58: How come the sunroof is so yellow-ey?"

Tough crowd over there. Good example of the two ways to think, if it is the right car to buy. Original paint no, and a big deal, still no for what this car will get. Body shop price to remove and refinish sunroof panel, maybe $500. DIY, price of materials, maybe $25. and some beer.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif

This is the most telling sentence in the entire auction...

“The seller also states that engine damage caused by the failure has not been evaluated.”

Totally bullsh|t, I don’t believe that for a second. This seller knows just how badly damaged this motor is, and that it’s not just a normal rebuild, but much more invasive than that. This is exactly why it’s on BaT, so nobody can do a proper and thorough evaluation of the car prior to its purchase. It’s not even worth it for him, the owner, to put the money that is needed into this car, and he owns it. I’d wager whoever buys this will be upside down on it, even where it’s currently bid at is too high. This is a total money pit the next owner will never be able to be made whole on. This could be the BaT buyer’s remorse special of 2020.

I think almost everyone is forgetting that in 2000 when the engine failed this was a $20/25K car in running condition.
The car was just an old Porsche that wasn't worth fixing.
This owner missed his prime selling window by 5/6 years. Could you imagine the price for a PTS 930 in 2014. Blown engine or not he would have got $65k+ for it.

hahaha oh ya.. window missed! Wonder how or why it wouldn't have been sold then given the length of time it's been sitting out of commission. Price is slowly creeping as it sits at 34.5k right now.

Because in 2015 people were convinced the prices would never stop going up. ;)
