The hobby is officially dead....
I have a 2005 Audi Allroad that I picked up for basically nothing 6 months ago. Since then I have put in steel suspension, redone the calipers, pads, and rotors plus flushed the brakes. Replaced the HVAC head unit cleaned the drains. Flushed the coolant. Replaced the motor mounts. Did the timing belt and water pump. I bought the suspension used and the other parts and my time are what I have in the car.
I park it on the street in front of the house. Got a note on it asking if I would sell it. WTF I call the guy, he says he's working in the neighborhood and asked to stop by tomorrow. So I said sure. I told him I'd take $3500 bucks for it. He gets here.... oh this is perfect, my wife will love it, just what she's been looking for. I said great I'm a dealer we can do this easily. Oh, I can give you $1000 cash for it... come on its cash right now. I said at $3500 it has to be cash too. Okay what about that 911 over there, what year how many miles.... 70k its an 88.... I'll give you $35k for it. Its red and its not worth anything more than that. No one is getting big money dont let them fool you. Wait what happened to you were just looking for a car for your wife? Its rare that I even find a legit retail buyer anymore. Last month I sold a 2014 Mini Clubman. I put it on Craig's List and 9 out of 10 people were flippers low balling and telling me why I should sell them the car. They're not even legit dealers just title jumping flippers. On facebook I am a member of some of the air cooled groups. I don't post much but I read the posts. Anytime someone posts a pic of their car just for vanity ...."oh my god that's exactly what I am looking for.... Can I buy it?" Mean while a 30 second search on FB shows they say that to every single air cooled pic posted. Last fall I was helping a local friend swap the muffler and cat on his 86 targa. Guy comes running up, oh what a cool car can I take a couple of pictures. Do you want to sell it blah blah blah. No he's not a seller, okay can I take a few pictures. Two days later those photos are up in Facebook market place with a price listed by some scammer not even the guy who took the photos.

Ha! I’ve had a couple of those type of guys approach me, so I give them a price. The look on their face is priceless. Oh well, I guess it’s not for sale then..lol.

The S/N ratio is certainly low but deals can still get done. We just have to be vigilant in flushing the lowball scammers quickly and reward them with nothing. When a real buyer comes along, close the sale.
I sold a 2012 Tundra last year and endured a bunch of lowball email offers over several weeks. Then along came a real qualified buyer, drove the truck, paid full asking price and off he went. I was asking $17k (Kelly Bluebook PP market value) and when email lowballers offered $13k I responded "how about $23k?". They disappeared pretty quickly but more would ask and receive the disrespect they so richly deserved. When one guy said "hey, I thought you advertised it for $17k" I would respond with "Yep, show up with $17k and the truck is yours. Make lame email offers and I will respond with lame counter offers. Just waiting for a real buyer and that is clearly not you." I have no interest in doing business with these losers. They would probably show up with fake bills anyways.

Easy solution: just don't sell any of the cool cars, keep them all, and become a hoarder.

When I get texts from LowBallers, my reply:
I have taken note of your offer....30 days from now, I will consider the highest offer...Already have 6 that are higher than you offer. Want to bump it up????

I have a few very pristine air cooled cars and I get ppl asking to buy.
I always tell them they are for sale, $1MM and not a penny less. I give them my pre-printed wire instruction to my receiving account, what bankers call sweep account. always zero balance, it's only to receive wires. after that, they usually leave me alone. |

I'm glad the market has cooled off. It used to be every time I drove the 79 someone would flag me down asking if I wanted to sell.
Now it's pretty rare. And why is it 75% of the time it's a Hispanic guy asking? They chase me down in their truck. Does the BHCC offer finders fees I don't know about? Is there some sort of unspoken finders fee for used car dealers? I know the guy in a $1,500.00 truck does not want my car. And I'm not being racist. It's just what happens to me and it's odd.
