You don’t see these for sale every day - complete 930 shell from Porsche!

https://mart.pca.org/ads/45219
Price seems a little steep, but other than a complete car, there’s not much out there to compare it to.

‘About This Part
Completely new 930 Turbo body with 5 speed manual transmission (G50). Car is covered with primer and came directly to me from Porsche factory in Stuttgart. Probably the only one left in the world! Car is based in Stuttgart, Germany. Model year: 07/1989 In 1989, during the only time in which Porsche produced the 930 with the G50 transmission I ordered this body. Because I ordered the body itself and not as a part of a whole car it has no VIN, but a production number.’

If the story checks out I think that price is dirt cheap.

Very Cool.

No VIN? So it’ll never be insurable or street legal. It seems like it’s doomed to forever being a garage queen. As cool as this is, it seems like it’s just a NOS parts car without a VIN.

“Bodies in white” were common. Depending on state there are definitely ways to put it back on the street legally

What are basing this off of to say cheap? What does a running and driving ‘89 turbo cost? $130-140? Just guessing but either way you’ll be in this car $300k East by the time you’re done at that price and the amount of **** you still need to buy ala carte and paint etc.

How is this accomplished without a VIN?

I'm sure some folks prefer "brand new" and are willing and able to pay for it.

Some states assign VINs to home-built cars

I’m not following how a VIN can be assigned to a car sold on a bill of sale, there’s no title with these, just like the ‘Project Gold’ 993 turbo mentioned above. That car was born the same way, from an old body in white that had been laying around for decades. It was sold on a bill of sale, and it is NOT street legal. Porsche even built that one themselves, and they still couldn’t even assign a VIN to it - their own car. If they can’t do it, I don’t think anyone else can either.

Most states have what’s called a “custom construction” or something similar that allows a car like this to be put on the road. You need a brake and lamp inspection to be performed and highway patrol will inspect to make sure the obvious bases are covered as far as making sure it is not a stolen car That’s had its numbers removed and they may go as far as to ask for proof of purchase for the parts to insure it wasn’t assembled with stolen parts

Minnesota would allow you to put this on the road as long as you keep all of your build receipts and present them at time of inspection.
The inspection isn’t for roadworthiness or such in MN, it’s to check that you have the claimed chassis number, engine number etc as claimed on your receipts.
They then give you a state chassis number.
You can’t buy the all the parts from one source though. I did this with my Ariel Atom. Bought the frame from one place, shipped in an EP Honda engine from Japan (via eBay) etc.
The only down is you get a ‘reconstructed’ title.

While this is very cool, I wouldn't buy it. An 89 930 is a cool car, but not terribly rare, or expensive in grand terms. $150,000 would probably buy you any color you want.
If you spend $70,000 on this, spent another $100,000-150,000 getting it on the road, then found some backdoor to make it road legal, what would you have? A car worth about half what it would be normally, which is basically the starting point at the asking price.
The only way this car would be worth it would be to use it exactly as it was intended, to fix a mangled car. So if you had a very special late 80's 930, and wanted to save it correctly, this body would be the way to go. All above board, in fact I would probably send it to Stuttgart to have to work done, just to add to the provenance. But it better be a very special car.

Considering you can buy a 930 roller for about $20,000 normally, one without a VIN, no matter how much white primer you stare at, makes it hard to justify, which is probably why someone still has it, 30 years later.

Singers sell for close to a $1,000,000 proving that wealth and desire have limited less boundaries.

The Golden 993 Turbo S sold for $3.4mm despite the ability to buy a practically new one for $500,000. Given this what would a Porsche Classic fresh 1989 930 would be worth?

I can not believe the factory would not want it back. $70,000 is chump change in these discussions.

I'm with macroni. It's a steel for the right person/company to build the last G-series Porsche, build a RUF BTR, or Singer-like custom work of auto-art.

It's also possible to use it to bring back a crash-damaged 930 with a clean title. There are plenty of places where you can order the replacement vin plates to do so...

I was looking for the add for that red one on a trailer that's been for sale forever. Really low mileage, all there. This body in white is perfect for a car like that.
