Cayenne Diesel prices are high. Why?
Every now and then I get the urge to sell everything, and start over. I've got an 81 SC coupe, new engine almost done, spare 83 motor in it. 01 Boxster S, IMS done, Soul muffler bypass 83,000 miles, 2005 Cayenne S with air suspension, 135,000 miles, 2007 M6 convertible, 20,000 miles, 78 beetle convertible.
Lastly, I have a 2014 Cayenne Diesel, Sport Design package, sport tailpipes, 21" Sport edition wheels with wheel arch extensions, Pano roof, and some other options. It is CPO until 12-3-2021. Emission warranty till 12-3-2023 I've owned it 3 years I think, and its been a pleasure to own. I paid a lot for it because it looks like a GTS, had 38000 miles I think when I purchased. I'm looking at prices, and wow. Isringhausen just listed a 14 for $38K. Its a cool color, and CPO, but that's similar to what I paid for mine 3 years ago. I know asking and getting... supply/demand... Just curious what you guys think. Thanks, Bill |

I have a 2015 Diesel that my wife an I drove around America in 2017. 13,000 miles in 10 weeks and most days out west over 100 MPH. Even with all my wife's luggage and at altitude and speed, we never got below 27 MPG. Most days were between 30 and 32 MPG and we could go all day without refueling if we didn't driver more than 700 miles. Love it. Now I use it to pick up and deliver 911s with my open trailer.
Plus the courts made Porsche give me a pant load of money to Federalize it. ![]() |

Are you conflating private party vs. dealer markup?
CPO is a meaningless way to inflate asking prices for suckers.

Yep, I got a CPO with my Cayenne. First one I have ever bought. When I bought the car, it had a year left on the Diesel settlement warranty. So I had a year to drive the Cayenne, before the CPO kicked in. That gave me 3 years, unlimited milage on a used Porsche.
I rarely keep modern cars beyond 2 years, so I figured it was a good bet that if I want to sell the car, the CPO would facilitate a quick, painless sale. If my PM and email messages are any indication, I may be right. Ive bought at least 30 air cooled 911s, and never have had a PPI. Most worked out well, some did not. The knowledge, and the resources to maintain air cooled stuff never intimidated me. Problems, with the ability to correct, is part of the hobby. Working on new stuff... just doesn't interest me. So I figure my CPO, (plus the one year free), if I keep the car for another year, will cost me about $80 a month. And thats if I never use it. I stated earlier I had the Cayenne 3 years. That statement was a year off. I bought it in June of 2018. Cheers all, this is a fun site. Ive been gone a long time. Last edited by wm711; 07-27-2020 at 04:17 PM.. |

You’d be crazy not to go CPO on a diesel. They have a new emissions strategy via DME reprogram which means the throttle body and sometimes the entire intake manifold and/or EGR cooler has to be removed to clean out soot particulates. Best to run them hard and always in sport mode.
Then there is the timing cover leak which many also will get. Engine out because timing cover is on the firewall side. The warranty is really good due to emissions debacle so values remain high....

in my defense, i never buy any of the extended warranty at best buy. I did, once, buy the extended warranty on a drill from harbor freight. I was restoring something and I knew I would be really hard on the drill. I think I got 4

My wife has a 2014 CD. Bought it right around the start of diesel gate and got the extended warranty / fix and nice settlement check from Porsche AG. Car has been rock solid and gets great gas mileage. They probably have strong resale values since they didn't build a ton of them (diesels never sold well in the US) and have monster tow capacity for SUV's.

If I dont sell it, it will be put in heavy rotation as the workhorse of the fleet. I figure by the end of 2021 it will have 110,000 miles.

Please don't try to justify your decision making process to the court jester. His feelings get hurt rather easily if you don't agree with him and he comes roaring back at you guns a'blazin'.
Stand by. Shouldn't be long now.

OK, I was addressing the potential scenario where you did not buy CPO (low price)
but the dealer is selling it as CPO, which would explain the inflated price. As you already know, there is a significant markup and profit margin on CPO cars. If the warranty was profitable for the consumer, they wouldn't underwrite it. It is atypical to see no depreciation on a late model German car. So, either you got an insane deal 3 years ago, or Isringhausen has crack pipe asking today. KBB Trade in value for a 2014 Cayenne Diesel with 38k miles in Very Good condition is $24k Private Party value is $27k. So, as expected, the value has indeed dropped in the last 3 years. Crack Pipe Seller at $38k, which is almost 40% higher than private party value of $27k

My DD is a 2015 Touareg TDI, same basic powertrain/body. It's been as reliable as an anvil once the dealer figured out a few bugs after the emissions recall. I got it cheap around the time of dieselgate.
I can easily go 1200km (750mi) on a tank of fuel.

To be fair, almost any modern car that is only 5-6 years old is a rock solid reliable anvil.
The real test is after it hits 100k miles and is closer to 10-12 years old
