Is there still demand for a strong running 3.2?

I am playing with the idea of building my 3.2, or maybe selling it and putting something else in. Is there still a pretty strong market for these? What is the best way to sell something like a complete engine? I would imagine a local sale is going to absolutely be the easiest way to go.

I appreciate your input on this!

Still a good market for 3.2s. I would sell in car through the Pelican classifieds.

i have questions--

how many miles on the motor?

what year is the car (more on this later)?

do you have the budget even after selling the 3.2 to acquire and likely rebuild a 3.6?

is you car a G50 car? im pretty sure if a "i'll punch you in the mouth G50" car it makes the 3.6 swap a bit less trouble.

how does the 3.2 not serve your current needs if the motor is sound and requires little work? see my 1st question.

im on a bunch of jeeps sites and every swinging dick wants to talk about a LS swap and enjoy talking about it when it's obvious they can't ever get a swap done and/or their jeep is not worthy. by the looks of your motor you seem to have the means and ways to get something done.

motor swap discussions are a form of mental masturbation for the OP and we as an audience will often encourage it simply by playing along with the discussion.

Build it into a 3.4. /thread

TanukiPDX 08-25-2020 06:05 AM

Thanks for the responses!

This is in a 1986 Targa with a 915. The engine has 91,000 miles and has never skipped a beat.

I bought the car for a build, so while everything is in great shape, as I have started to look at the cost of building the motor, I am trying to decide if I would rather start with a 3.6 and spend the time and money building that out. I have seen some great 3.2 builds though, so I may consider just building this and running for a few years. I am not as worried about the cost of everything, I am more concerned with spending that money and time on the motor if I won't be happy with the result.

My last big car build was putting an RB26 into a 240z, so I don't mind doing the work, or spending the money, though I know a 3.6 costs a lot more than an RB26.

Even a 3.6 won’t compare to an RB26 swap. You’re gonna need a 930 engine and g50 if you want to be even close to what you are used to.

Yeah, I totally hear ya there too. I do want this car to be a bit more balanced. I have come to terms with the fact that too much power is a thing too. Honestly I think going 3.4 may be fine for now and I can continue with something more dramatic later on. This is not as much of a dick swinging or mental masturbation as someone stated so eloquently above though. This is more about a balanced feel that can perform how I need it to.

I have done some strange things with cars in the past, but I want this car to stay well balanced and have enough power to turn some big wheels without feeling like I am driving a 2CV.

Have you looked into a low boost 3.2? That's the route I'd take. Unless you're trying to stay NA.

But yes, there's always a market for a good 3.2.

I have seen a few pretty crazy 3.2 turbo builds. I think that may be a good route. I was thinking of going as far as I could as an NA, but the lowboost seems like it would still have a nice feel driving it.

Had a well sorted 83 Targa w/ a 3.6L.... fastest Aircooled I have owned.... silly fast. Need to work out all the details for a proper 3.6 Install; cooling, brakes and suspension.

You know most people complain about the 915 vs G50 between a carrera and a 964, but for me the lack of suspension options for my car actually is a bigger deal to me. I looked for a nice 964 Targa, but they were so few and far between. This car was SO clean I knew I could work around it. Do you have a link to a build for your car or more info on it?

I bought it. Here is the thread from when it was built.

What about a 3.4 with programmable EFI. Throttle response is fun!

‘PDX’. Are you in Portland? If so swing by Rothsport and see if Jeff has a motor that’ll work. Trade yours plus cash.

TanukiPDX 08-26-2020 06:17 AM

WOW what a deal! That is a really nice car. You should be very proud of her!

I am from Portland, but recently moved to Utah :(. I still might Call Jeff though and see what he says. I don't mind the road trip.

I was just a lucky purchaser.

You should see the car now. It was sold last year on BaT and the sellers had pushed it to the next level.

Interesting to hear of your last project 240z with RB26DETT swap. I thought those were a death trap due to feedback from former customers. I sold a dozen or so RB26 swaps back in the early 2000s to guys over there. 3 of them put them into 240z. One guy said that to me when I mentioned a built motor – it’s a death trap as it is without the brakes or suspension.
Bob Hanvey was a navy pilot one guy, the guy who recommended him to me forgot his name. A guy that drove a U-haul all the way from MO and picked up a whole drive train for an R33 GT-R including the chassy loom etc. was the guy I remember most. Vince Cox, was going to do the whole AWD into a 240z and cut the body/chassy for the whole AWD GT-R configuration to fit. He was the greatest guy and so I remember his name. He lost his fiancée and later moved to OC CA and I lost touch with him. Don’t know if he ever did it, yet he seemed very capable and had the vision. He fell in love with a woman in OC with 4 kids and I eventually lost touch with him. Maybe you might have heard of these guys or others who I knew during your project.

I had my slew of GT-Rs I built over here R32, 33 and 34. You can get a gist of that if you read into the sugarwood JAP car thread. I have posted a few stories on there and some pics. Matt Monson absolutely loves that thread, since he has a love for Japanese cars and so do some of the moderators too. Matt is the only guy that bumps it these days cuz he’s so in love with it and wants to keep it alive. Personally, I like it too since I have experience in that area of cars and enjoy reading it.
Now Matt, although he doesn’t care for sugarwood in the least and recently said he wants to trap him and get him banned, loves that thread with a passion. He should actually give credit where credit is due. It’s a humpty dumpty thing. This for Matt isn’t about hate, it’s about addiction.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing some 240z pics with that RB26 swap and hear your opinions about the fun or trials you had. We can extrapolate further on the Porsche engine swap, or so everyone is already doing.

Still very cool. I tried digging through the BAT archives but I couldn't find it. My car is getting 18x12 wheels, so i need to make sure I can turn them.

Matt Monson 08-27-2020 06:44 AM

There is such a thing as too much rubber. These cars drive poorly with a footprint that large everywhere but on the track at the limit.
