Sale during pandemic from Canada - 1972 911T targa
I would like to sell my 1972 Porsche 911T targa but I can't get it over the US-Canada border. I had a two very interested buyers from the US but they looked into it and all non-essential border traffic is prohibited.
I would prefer to sell it locally but there are a lot of scammers/flippers/lowballers who end up wasting my time. I haven't been offered even 75% locally of what US buyers are willing to pay (approximately $65-70K USD). I assume that as the Euro is not super strong there would not be a lot of European interest but I could be wrong. Anyone have a good gauge of the European market? Any ideas as to the best way to sell the car for slightly below current market valuation either locally or internationally? The car does have some minor issues (mainly interior finishing, a minor paint correction to make the paint perfect in one area and reassembly of the front trunk). I am in the midst of finishing these details but they really don't bother me. My local ad: 1972 911T targa - Black on black (original colours, bare metal repaint 10 years ago) - Always a Canadian car (Alberta, BC, Alberta, Ontario) - Numbers matching (body, engine, transmission) - Same owner for the past 16 years - 98,000 original MILES (original speedometer/odometer) - No title issues or discrepancies or liens - No known accidents, no major rust repair (original floors, original rockers, original battery boxes, original front pan, original fenders, etc.) A list of some of the work in the past years: 1. The vehicle underwent a complete exterior bare metal paint job in the original colour from the factory (black). New exterior seals and trim were purchased and installed at the time of painting as required. New H4 headlights (originals included), driving lights, front and rear lenses and decklid lettering were also added. The car was repainted as it had a previous paint job that left ‘spidering’ in a few spots in the paint, not a result of an accident. I have lots of pictures of the pre-existing paint issues prior to the repaint and pictures during the repaint. 2. The original 2.4L engine was removed and serviced. A new clutch, rear main seal and clutch cable were installed and the pedal cluster was rebuilt. New Weber carbs and intake filters were installed replacing the Zenith carbs that were previously on the vehicle. Carrera chain tensioners were installed to prevent potential catastrophic engine failure. To resolve oil leakage issues, turbo valve covers and many new gaskets, seals, hoses and parts were installed on the vehicle. Other engine maintenance work was done including: - New starter - New alternator - New MSD ignition and coil (still have working original CDI unit) - New drain plugs (valve for oil tank, kept original plugs) - New spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor - New seals to address small leakages - Pressure tested engine cooler, new seals - Conducted compression and leakdown tests with excellent results - All headstuds were confirmed to be intact and tight 3. The interior was also refurbished. The door panels and door pockets were replaced with an original set in much better condition. The car originally came with two sports seats. I purchased a set of stock standard seats with excellent upholstery and switch between the two sets of seats. the upholstery of the passenger sport seat needs to be completely reupholstered. (two stock sport seats, two stock standard seats included) An OEM steering wheel was installed with new leather. New coco mats and a new original-look radio and speaker, seatbelts, etc. were installed. I still have the other leather steering wheel and almost all the replaced parts. A new turn signal stalk and Sucro relays were added. The door stays were also replaced or fixed as required as were multiple other small details such as the dash material and door pulls. 4. The targa top received a complete refurbishment and works with no issues. Two targa handles are present. 5. The tires, stock muffler, some stock suspension components, trunk carpeting, etc. were replaced as required. The brake calipers have recently been rebuilt with new seals, dust boots, fluid, lines, etc. 6. The car has all five matching Fuchs wheels with their original anodized finish. The tires are newer Bridgestone Potenzas. 7. I have the original factory tool kit and most of the tools. 8. The car had original factory air-conditioning (non-operable but I have all the parts), sport seats (now only one, set of standard seats in excellent condition included plus the one OEM sport seat). 9. The car has the 911S-trim option (aluminium brake calipers, gauges, exterior trim, etc.) and the wheel well trim (OEM original). This is is an original Canadian 911 and the car's known history indicates that it was bought in Canada and has never left Canada. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

You’ve got me kind of scratching my head. You said all non-essential border traffic is prohibited. Are you talking about someone driving it home or a shipper? I can’t imagine they’ve shut down shipping traffic.
I bet you can find a consignment dealer in the States and ship it down. That seems the cleanest.

Perhaps he's talking about the US buyers being unable to go to Canada to inspect the car and/or do the deal. I've been checking monthly and even calling the Canadian Border Services. There's no way an American is getting in unless they can prove, conclusively, that they're essential. For that kind of money, I'd want to see the car.
If you can hold off 6 to 8 months, they'll be opening the border. I hope. ![]()

if someone was serious - the "Alaska loophole" would do the trick, pretty certain. not that i'm recommending it.

Thanks for all the responses (and the compliments on the car!)
With respect to shipping, I have been told that shipping the car across the border is difficult to impossible and with likely at least a few weeks delay. It definitely is extremely difficult to visit Toronto from the US and see the car in person. I was looking for other options to sell the car (without issues and without aggravation) for slightly below market value. For value comparison, a 1972 targa recently sold on BAT for $78K USD from Vancouver, Canada. It had worse paint, no sport seats but a nice color, better interior finishing, more records and better providence. I would like to get approximately $10K less (plus no auction fees). https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1972-porsche-911t-targa-13/

Not sure where you're getting your info from but there's zero issue shipping the car across the border right now.
TFX International can ship and handle all the import paperwork for the buyer. |

Looking for top dollar and "doing the work" goes hand in hand.
Want a quick easy sale ? Dump the price 20-25%. What's a few thousand here and there versus the aggravation. And whatever you decide, try and avoid being scammed. Free bump for another one of these would like to sell but not really for sale threads. |

I was interested in buying the car for a customer but you didn’t reply to my DM yesterday so I found another car. Do you really want to sell the car or are you looking for reasons not to sell it?

fwiw: being a Canadian car? .... more difficult to import, as well as more expensive to import to the USA.
as opposed to a car in Canada that was imported from the USA. |

They're keeping the border closed for another month, that's what. Probably keep it closed all winter. It'll be the first time in 30 years I haven't been to Canada over the summer.
