Hi Folks,

What’s the market on a 1991 964 Tip car with a resent engine rebuild and well maintained over the years. Appreciate your input.

Coupe, 106k miles. Color: white history: clean

I can’t think of a worse way to waste $50k. I see 964 and 993 tips all over the place for low 40s. Maybe a rebuilt engine makes it worth $50k, I don’t know. But hell, for $50k, you could have all manner of extremely well sorted early 3.2s, SCs, and 997.2s.

The Tips are cars that will always be dogged. Look, I get it, people love 964 cars but the manual Coupe is hard to find and expensive. But a Tip in any model will never be a worthy car

Jesus guys. The guy wants help in pricing a car. He doesn’t care if you hate them. Maybe just keep that crap to yourself if you choose to offer any pricing input at all. Too much dick wagging around here. Maybe he’s only got one keg. Maybe he just doesn’t like driving a stick. Who cares? Just be helpful.

My price for a 964 Tip, never, ever, over $40,000 then plan to keep it because it’s a dog, not unlike the 928, that was in line to replace the 911. If you want a Tip, buy one, it’s your choice of course.

Personally, I have trouble seeing those cars for $35,000. The Tip is being looked at because all BOATS RAISES

When I'm old and get knee and hip replacements I would consider myself cripple and probably I would consider a TIP.

On the meantime I want 3 pedals.

It’s only a dog, because maybe you don’t know how to drive one. I have five and six speed 911s and a Tip 911. I drive tip properly, and it gets the most use. Trends change.

Agree. I have driven both. Tip in manual mode, can’t feel much of a difference. Is a manual car worth the extra $20k ?

Maybe, if it is your only 911. For me, I got a pristine loaded 993 cab for 25K. Couldn’t pass it up. I really don’t care about the Tip stigma, because I know how to drive a tip fast. I beat 6 speeds every day.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1605062819.jpg

I have to agree if you manual shift a tip it isn't bad as everyone makes them out to be. In auto mode they are fine in traffic but anemic. I rebuilt a 964 tip engine for a friend and in manual mode it pulls like a freight train. The Tip is a modified VW 4HP-22L 4 speed trans made by ZF. They are harder to work on than a C2 but at the end of the day if you want or need a car with an auto trans it is a great ride offering nearly everything a manual does minus the three pedals. Heck most every track car out there today has only 2 pedals these days. Yes Matt I know the differences and it is no PDK. ;)

The question is it is a 91 so is it an early engine or late engine? Serial numbers 62M52758 for Tip engines were the later engines with the updated heads, cylinders and crush gaskets added. These usually but not always have the plastic intakes. If it is an early engine you need to verify what was done. There are some shops just rebuilding them ignoring the TSB and IMO it is a short cut which will end up needing work again sooner than the later engines.

Be careful there are many out there claiming top end rebuilds only to find they were refreshed not rebuilt. Also verify who did the work and a detailed receipt of parts and what was done, otherwise have it checked out by a qualified Porsche mechanic who knows 964's. These are great cars but far too many were neglected for decades only to now be resurrected from years of neglect and are pigs with lipstick. When properly setup IMO one of the best air-cooled cars Porsche made. Each has its own series of Pros and Cons. Right now these cars are all showing their age and the engine is just many things to consider. As with all older cars rubber bits are drying out and needing expensive parts to replace so make sure everything has been updated.

I have found all 964's especially coupes and now targas to be on the rise. If you have an original paint car with all records and a properly rebuilt engine it could be worth as much as $50k. If it is a rare optioned car maybe more. Although I have seen neglected rusted out coupes with tip sell for as little as $6k but that was an anomaly purchased from a Police auction seized from a drug dealer. If you can post more info it might better help to price it but you have to deiced what it is worth to you.
