Does Marketplace Value 89 911s with 964 Transition Pieces and Parts?

I am curious if the 911 marketplace recognizes or attributes any value to the group of 1989 911s that have some of the 964’s pieces and parts. The PET details which VINs have which changes, and some seem significant such as the front and rear windscreen using the 964 glass, rubber gasket and body panels that offer the wider gasket seating lip (15mm v 10mm). From what I have read on this forum, the 964 windscreen setup is often noted as desirable. Other changes include transition to the 964’s fuel filler neck and plastic fuel filler cup, sunroof wind deflector style, the upper dashboard, and the rear side glass and seal. When I read the accolades of the 89 3.2 compared to the 88 and 87, this later 89 nuance never seems to capture any mention. Is it worth mentioning?

I don't know, yet it all sounds interesting to me. I have a MY 89' I'm putting back together rather slowly... It has some 964 nuances added and so I follow you. I hope to see your question answered here.

Any idea when those cross over bits started showing by vin number? Mine is around 200 to the end of the 89 carrera and I hadn't notice much but I hadn't been looking super closely either.

You could look at it as a 911 with new upgraded parts from the factory, or they ran out of parts for a 911 and had to substitute 964 parts. All in all, it is still a Porsche, and only those wanting a 911 with 964 parts would pay a premium. What would probably be better is to say last #xx of the 911.

A Technical Bulletin lifted from another post suggests the 89 911's transition to the 964 windshield setup was around October 13, 1988 (production date) with estimated VINs listed for each version. If I am reading the production numbers correctly (pasted further below) it seems like the transition took place just about mid-run. Still interested to hear if people who know this would search out one one of the last 500 coupes compared to one of the first 500 coupes.

If it's ok to ask here, a rather odd question I will... Ok here goes. You mention windscreen. I say odd because car is a Ruf BTR III imported Japan 1994. By vin it's a WOP ROW 89 MY. The Windscreem had a crack over 20 years ago when I got the car. Then, in Osaka I found a dead stock one the same (color) and it was 900 dollars then new, but it was bubbling around the lower right antenna wire inlet. Both windscreens had the dark green tint strip on top.

Regarding the build, the body was 964 turbo, bumpers, sides etc. It must have been done in the 964 era. Therefore, I assume the windscreen was also related to 964. Whether I'll use the tinted windscreen, or can repair the bubbling problem when I reassemble the car is a question. I've not thought about it til now. Perhaps someone can help? Sorry to ask this on your thread 1989carrera911!

Bubbling as in delaminating? I am not sure you can fix it, and with age, it will probably get worse.

My 88 widebody cab has a 964 front, rear and sideskirts. It was a common "update" back then.

Thank you Bryan! Sounds like delaminating as you mentioned. It's a bit deep in storage and I can't dig it out so quick or today. In fact, all the parts are in second floor room with a high ceiling on shelves built out of scaffolding pipes. The windscreen is behind the scaffolding rack and behind some sport seats in a box. I haven't looked at it for 10-15 years but I know it's still there. I'm afraid to look now! It might be worse after many summers in a hot room.

The dark green tint stripe at the top was a main concern. It may not pass safety code in some countries. I haven't seen a 911 on the road here with the tint or any other car. Perhaps it was a ROW thing in the day. Any 911s like that in HI or the USA?

By the way, this car also had an inner fender right 964 oil cooler with fan, left side fan driven A/C condenser. Lots of puzzles for me to bring it back. 20 plus years you forget and that is when I dismantled it as a younger man. Thanks again for the feedback...

I have come across a few of these late build 3.2's and when they went up for sale they didn't command any more over an earlier build but as we see each day the market is changing and people look for oddities that set their car apart from the rest so it might be more valuable in the future.
