Does low mileage add THAT much value?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/1099330-83-sc-1-owner-9480-miles-original-paint.html

I find this very curious. A low mileage (less than 10K miles) SC for the price of a late G-series turbo - $140k.

Assuming this isn't a typo (and they meant $40k), is the seller completely nuts or is this a more-or-less legitimate asking price given the mileage?

An SC with less than 10k miles is an extremely rare example. There can only be a handful of SCs around with that kind of mileage. If it’s in decent condition, absolutely worth all of $140k. Not a typo at all. You can’t even find crap SCs for $40k anymore. So $140k is not a reach at all. In fact, several recent BAT auctions have seen $70-80k for SCs with mileage in the 30-60k range. And this one has 9,000 miles! Wow.

With value added (or justified?) when the PO changes out every piece of dried rubber (o-rings, hoses, bushings, tires, et al) prior to posting for sale? Just wonderin! (assuming that the car in question will even get driven). Then again...maybe old rubber actually enhances value - because, hey, its original!

cellison 08-15-2021 06:44 AM

if the mileage is accurate then the 140 ask could be a place to start. i would like to see some more pictures. for such a low mile example the rubber around the windshield does not look like it would be from a 9k mile 911 which has been garaged. i imagine it will end up bat.

sugarwood 08-15-2021 11:14 AM

Yes. The relationship is not linear.
It is a "poor value" since a 9k mile car is priced like art, not an appliance with utility.

dw1 08-15-2021 12:42 PM

Thanks for the replies. I understand the consensus is that the price is not out of line, given the low mileage.

It just seems a bit odd to me because in the end the car is still an SC. I guess that is why I'm not a vehicle collector.

Just as a thought experiment:
Let's see, what else could one get for $140k - a '80s 930, an E-type Jag, a Mercedes 280SE Cabrio, any number of highly desirable 60's muscle cars (maybe even more than one), etc., etc.......vehicles that IMHO are in a different league than a 911 SC.

dwelle 08-15-2021 01:27 PM

pretty simple, really.

the market isn't being driven by guys like you, or most on this board.

the only constant in this world is change. the market can never stay where it was and will always move and be driven by the folks that want a 911. pretty clear that demographic has changed over the last 5 years. and over the last 10 years. 15, etc...

You’re jaded. The SC is a nearly perfect car, for its era. They were so cheap for so long it’s easy to be complacent about them.

I'd expect that the buyer of that SC probably already has a pristine 930 with similar miles, and a number of other peachy cream puffs. If you want to build a vertical collection of 911s through history, you want a tipsy topsy specimen even for the humbler models.

Those are some hard miles.

Yes, and none of them will have only 9k miles.

My 2 cents as a multiple decade 930 only dealer. Here are some photos of a well cared for 79 930 I sold about 10 years ago. Ended up @ Sloan. The rubber was as new. Now this is what one with those miles ideally should look like ( bet it still does ) to be really pristine, right down to the red cellophane dot on the brake pedal. I kept it for about 5 years. Still have a 79, now with 33K miles ( liked the color more ) that was kept and is still just about as nice as that one was. Won't make that same mistake again. BTW, the black 85 930 Euro now on bat ( just one day left ) looks like a great one for someone to grab. Appears excellent original and not gussied up for resale. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1629124610.jpg

agreed.

voitureltd 08-16-2021 09:31 AM

By looking at the photo provided, to me the SC being discussed is not a pristine example. Just a low mileage one that was neglected and poorly stored. I bet there are better higher miles ones out there just like with 930s. One of he worst 930 I ever saw was an original paint 77 that had 27K miles. Looked good from 20 feet but the rubber items and underneath looked like 10 times that from sun and salt exposure. Miles are important but not a stand alone defining factor and should be part of a cars value. How much does mileage count? Depends on so many other things.

^^^ yup!!!

Mileage is extremely important unless it is a 356. They can have incorrect motors, 300,000! Miles and still be worth $100,000 !

techweenie 09-02-2021 06:48 AM

All it takes is a casual stroll through Bringatrailer to see the inconsistency of the market. The exception being low miles. Buyers there seem to go all squishy over super low mile cars.
