88 911
Would you buy a 911 from a dealer that puffs smoke on start up and when the car gets up to temp? The Dealer says its from the valve seals. Motor has 90K+ miles. How much to get re-ringed and valve seals done? Is $22K a decent price barring that the valves are the only problem?
Thanks Pb |

I think that's high, even for a G50. More like 18-19, less an allowance to fix the smoking. Make sure you get a ppi, especially on this car that has 3.2 valve guide symptoms.

A top end job is $3-5,000 on a 911, just keep that in mind. How many miles are on the body? A Carrera needing work like that is worth about half that price.

For an 88 NO way! The top end job will turn into a while I am in there thing and you will spend 6-10K or more. If they want to sell the car is worth about 16K - 18K knowing that a top end job needs to be done. Valve seals my arse, prolly guides. Whats the millage? That said if you can get it for 16K - 18K then rebuild the motor and know you have a strong power plant and considering that everything else is good it may be worth it. For 22K I think NOT!

I see you're from Victoria, so you're talking about $CDN? Some posters here may be thinking $22K US. However, I think you can do better. Like many have said, count on some $$$ to track down the oil smoke. Pointman is right, worn valve seats will affect compression but the only way for oil to even get down into the valves is for the guides to be worn out. And for this you get to pay 7% extra GST (soon to be 6%- whoohoo!) Check out Autotrader.ca for starters. I got my car privately for about that price, but no GST and not ONE drop of oil on the garage floor in 1 1/2 years and no smoke, Porsche car cover included and Bentley manual (gotta have one). I would also expect $4,000-$5,000 for engine work. Hope you find the one that's right for you. By the way, I have seen Porsche dealers in Van. asking over $30,000 for comparable cars, but these are pretty well pristine.

If a dealer's car runs poorly, odds are, it's something serious and expensive. Because if it wasn't, the dealer would have fixed it.
I'd keep looking.

Ain't that the truth? Today the engine that puffs smoke is worth about what the guy was asking for the car.

At that point we still had half a dozen years until a $10k G body was hard to find.
