Vehicle report scam

Although I’m not selling my Porsche I am selling my Toyota and a scam is a scam. So it goes like this. The buyer ask you all sorts of questions then ask if he or she can come over to see the car. Then they proceed to ask you for the vehicle report plus provide you a link to a site where you can pay for a carfax type report. The problem is they want your credit card information so they can steal it. Twice it was attempted, twice I told them to go fork themselves.

Man. Some people are so freaking dumb. I’m not paying for a “carfax “ on my own car. You want one, you get one.

on another scam note of note... i listed my jeep on craigslist the other day and they are now charging $5 to list an add. would not take paypal, credit card only. i get that a few bucks is prolly a good thing for CL bottom line, but I also wonder if it will be cutting down on the fake adds some moving forward. scums doing fake adds may be more reluctant to scatter shot so many adds.

Yup I paid the $5.00. It was only a matter of time before they started charging. It’s only fair but it may have been a little too late as Facebook Marketplace seems to be the go to place for all sorts of things.

Actually it’s not dumb. I ran a carfax (free for me) on my last Turbo before I sold it. Luckily I did, my State DMV screwed up the mileage (inputted the wrong mileage) and the report stated there was a mileage discrepancy. I was able to clear it up rather quickly. Had a buyer ran it, he or she would have believed the carfax. So yes it does make sense to run your own. Carfax can’t always be trusted to provide the correct information.

You are applying dumb to the wrong thing. If I want a car fax, I’m running a car fax. If you give someone your credit card number so that they can run a car fax, you’re an idiot. This scam works because some people are dumb.

Matt the way the scam works is they send you a link to a vehicle report site(not a Carfax). You don’t give the buyer your CC info, when you go to purchase the report on the site your CC info is stolen. Apparently not everyone is aware of Carfax otherwise I don’t know how this scam continues to work. I agree though, some people are idiots and are far too gullible.

Yea, I understood all that. Maybe I confused you by using “carfax” like I use Kleenex, generically. That’s why it’s in quotes.

Surprised they're finally charging for private sales. The skid loader listing were free for by owner... which is why all the dipchit dealers would post as by owner. I started putting in my listings "Ask yourself, if the dealer is willing to lie to save $5 on a machine listing, what else are they lying about"

This scams been around for years. They'll insist they don't trust carfax so you have to use that site for their report. They'll tell you things like "me _____ is a dealer and he said not to use carfax only thrust this site" ..... or..... I went to look at one like yours last week and the carfax said it was a good car when I saw it the car was bad"
