Calling All 964 Experts! Cheap Chassis Price?
 

I got a lead on a 964 shell/chassis with suspension

- Prior track car
- No idea exact year yet
- Comes with transferable registration
- Includes front crossmember / rack / spindles / rotors

I would like to know what a fair price would be to buy this car.

It would most likely be a long term project. Not a restoration. More along the lines of correct or bigger motor, minimalistic interior, more 'streetable'..

I'd like to hear opinions on what your "buy it now and figure out what you bought later" price would be?

The drivetrain, electronics and all the ancillary requirements is is gonna kill the budget.

True, but looking at some prices of wrecked 964’s on salvage auction might make it a decent deal.

A car with enough body/frame damage to use as a donor for this car might make it worth while and still have some profit margin when it’s time to let it go.

Not if you have those parts already, and you get it cheap. I would trust Cobalt to have an answer for this, but then he might be interested to have it as well. The right door seems a bit out of alignment or is it just the angle and door not shut properly. No pics from rear and right front so it is still out of focus. Has it been hit anywhere like rear or right front? That is something that is hard to know from the pics.

The drivetrain was donor for a '72 RS build that is now in Brazil.

This wouldn't be a terrible donor if it wasn't an automatic

Yup it looks like the doors are being held with bunjee cords.

He mentioned no accident history and I'll get more pics before I make any trip.

Anyone ever work with Weekend Rides in Lake Ariel, PA?

They seem to do a lot of part outs so might give them a ring.

You can try to find a cheap cab but their pricing is trending upward. Could be a pricey project.

I understand that. But if I were to purchase and just hold onto it. Might be worth to just get it rolling and sell later on for a profit. If there is money to be made, that interests me too.. will help fund my own place and/or other aircooled projects.

Well we know there’s a market for the 964 hot rod which is what it sounds like you want to build but generally the buyers expect some upgrades such as a built engine, upgraded suspension, nice interior etc. I would venture to guess that by the time you source the parts and spend the money needed for a proper nicely done paint job you’re not going to have lots of profit left. Unless you intend to do all the work yourself?

I understand, that makes sense. Yes, I would be doing the work myself. I have been learning more and more over the last few years with these cars and any chance to own a 964 model would be sweet.

Either way, If I needed to sell the car, worst case scenario - I don't think I'd lose out on much.

Going to borrow some parts from a friends 964 roller and try to get it rolling for transport.

Not a market I’d want to be playing in. Singer has so completely warped the cost of everything related to 964, especially engines and gearboxes. Personally I would be more interested in something like that that was a 3.2 chassis. 964 is going to cost exponentially more to reassemble and not leave a ton of upside profit with how much it will cost you.

There is a reason that rolling shells are always sooooooo cheap. The uphill to make them back into a car is daunting. Unless you just wrapped your car around a tree, it's hard to do any kind of math on a stripped ex-track car.

Man this sucks.. If I had my own place to put it I would have already went to pick it up but now I'm in a bad spot.

Will try to come up with something in the meantime but I just feel like it's worth the 7500 maintaining all of it's original panels/spot welds etc. If this car was on a salvage auction, the pre bid would probably be over 10k :(

And you may be able to flip it for that with some effort. But if you build it, every cent of that $2500 gain will be burned in labor.

Yup.. lots of things to consider.

A member contacted me and has tons of 964 parts I might purchase off him to get the interior looking better.

The drivetrain will come from a car I get off the auction/someone who totals there's.

It can collect dust until then. Definitely will be a pretty paper weight unless I just offer it to someone else who is equipped to build it.
