Question Mid-80s Targas in Rainy Weather

I'm looking to pick-up a mid-80's 911, and have a special affection for Targas. However, I live in Seattle and I've heard stories of leak issues. Anyone have any advice on, 1) what to look for when evaluating the integrity of the roof and panels, and 2) the likelihood of a leak and ease (or lack of) in fixing it?

thanks!

I have an SC Targa that I've driven for five years in all weather that doesn't involve snow or salt or temps too cold for the oil, so plenty of rain. I'd suggest that things to look for would include the condition of the top, presence of a correct windshield header seal, the fit of the front of the top to the body (the two are related), the condition of the other seals, and general alignment. There are a lot of alignment factors - of top, doors, vent window frames, windows - that go together to get a leak-free top, and it'll still probably leak a little in enough heavy rain.

If a 911 Targa happens to get caught in the rain, it will collect a bit more water with the top off than with the top on. BTDT.

I would not worry too much about leaks. I have small droplets on the back part of passenger window. Spend an afternoon adjusting the top and replacing any bad seals.

This post is hilarious, I hope to joke with you guys some in the future, but today I want to say that I USED to own a 1977 911S Targa for 16 years in Bellingham WA. I drove it as my daily, so I experienced lots of everything, I still have the snowboard rack for it since it was great for taking to Baker. Anyway, the only consistent rain penetration issue I had, and the car was not garaged as I lived on my sailboat at the marina most of those years, was along the side roll up windows, and that only really happened when the car was in use since the glass would be in a different position after closing the door. I could tuck the flaps correct to avoid drips if i was going to leave the car for a bit in the rain. But really it wasn't all that bad and the '77 was galvanized, so it survived a few internal soakings. What really got my attention was when I got an imperceptible crack in the roof top and it saturated the liner with water. That's replacement time, big time, as everything goes south inside the car really quick. All in all, I'd just go for it, life is short do what you want, and btw I love the '78SC, I still want one, great car. One last thing, before anyone thinks I abused my car, I sold it for bucks 7 years ago and it's back in Germany in a collection now. BTW, the reason I'm back on this forum after so many years away is I'm looking for a 78-99 Targa. I haven't made up my mind yet exactly, I need to see the car probably. But, I strongly prefer the late 70's galvanized body cars, and no whale tail cars.

He's only looking for Targas in a span of 21 years, so at least he's narrowed it down, if he probably sees it.

Despite the rambling, it's way too coherent to be Bernie. And the style is insufficiently self-congratulatory (e.g., no references to an international modeling career).

oh, and he bumps thread that are months old with nothing else to contribute.

those are pretty much his two tricks, them and trying to please miagi and being raw's head cheerleader.
