1984 911 Targa Valuation

I have an opportunity to purchase a 1984 Targa and wanted to get some feedback from the group.
This is a single owner (female) California car. It has 300K miles, with the engine rebuilt with about 1000 miles ago. Mechanically, there are a high number of items that have been replaced. Clutch was recently replaced. Has a 5 speed trans, i'm assuming it's a G50 but not sure. Car was repainted in 2018. Reportedly no rust. It needs a fair amount of interior work, seats, carpet, door panels, the dash was recently replaced along with a new targa top. No heater, ac is not working, rear engine lid does not stay open. I have some low res pixs. I have not seen the car yet, plan to go next week. Appreciate any feedback. I used to have a 930, so i'm somewhat familiar with these cars.

best, Paul.

what is the intent with the car? drive it on the weekends or is it a project to drive better on those weekends? who did the work? are there receipts for said work? can you work on the car? bleed brakes, change oil, tranny fluid? can you rebuild the suspension refreshing the nearly 40 y/o rubber bushing?

The 84 was the 1st year of the 3.2 and had a 5 speed 915.

what are the tires like?

Would be a weekend car. There are reciepts for the work. I need to find out if the suspension has been renewed. Tires are new. I can handle the maintenance items mentioned. Thanks for the confirmation on that trans model.

I haven't heard the price yet. If cheap enough why pass? Granted 300k miles is an issue, but no rust reported, lots of positives on upkeep and engine rebuilt with recent new paint? I'd say go look at it if the price is right... Why not?

Rebuilt engine, clutch, no rust for the right price I would jump on it. I would want to see those receipts however.

A few red flags for sure, but not necessarily ones that would kill the deal; just ones that require deeper investigation.

A recent engine rebuild requires the information on who did it and receipts. I would then drill down deep on the shops reputation...very deep. I would also check all that paper work. A good shop doing this kind of work will list the other stuff they think the car needs. Then there's how much this rebuild cost. Could be very telling.

"Reportedly no rust." Uh huh. Bring a magnet and a paint meter. No mention of any accidents.

New dash, or dash cover? Who did the Targa top? That could be a pricey job well done, or a crappy job. Same with the paint job.

No heat or A/C? Jeepers. That's a pain. You'll need at least heat in NJ.

You don't mention price. At $50K I'd pass. At $30K I'd like to check it out. At $45K I'd go over it with a fine toothed comb. This car is gonna cost you money after you buy it.

Good luck.
Nick

Great points and agree with everything except for the heater. Unless he's gonna drive the car in salt season, which would be a bad idea, I don't think he needs it.

Also single owner female who put 300k miles on a 3.2 sounds like one of the most awesome women in history. Send her my love.

A non-working heater is often something as simple as crusty non-functioning flapper boxes, bad cables and/or torn paper feeder tubes. Not a deal breaker by any means.

AC should be updated and modernized anyways, if one wants it. Budget several thousand dollars. Or don’t do it.

I would consider a purchase price of $25-30k reasonable.

If she's put all 300K on the car by her lonesome, she's definitely worth a bump!

Thanks for the feedback guys. She's asking 30k. She does have a detailed receipt of the engine rebuild and mentioned the mechanic, who was German, and the name of the shop in CA. Dashboard is not a cover. Thanks for the info regarding the heater and targa top. I'm hoping she has all the documentation. I have a pic of the back of the car as well I'll post.

Nothing useful to contribute, as usual.

Yes, Berniesouse, I saw your non-answer. It's your typical asking for the asking price because you don't have any knowledge of what the car is really worth. Here's a better thread for you to "contribute" to. Your old buddy Suga is talking trash about guys who take apart cars and hoard them forever. Should be familiar territory with your water logged fake Ruf you've been sitting on for decades...

You should keep your off colored comments about banging women out of people’s marketplace threads. Take it to off topic.

I like the "asking $30K". Show up with a handful of cash. Not many running/driving air cooled 911's in that price range. Still, do your due diligence.

That was Rick Brooklyn's joke. Go with the humor, don't stifle it or misconstrue it.
