1972 911t

My brother was restoring his 1972 911t coupe but sadly passed away before completing the car. I’m now in the position of having to sell the car and all its associated parts or finding someone to complete the restoration. Should I first find someone to appraise the car? Where would I find someone to complete the restoration? Not really sure how to handle this and would appreciate some advice.

Good morning. I’m sorry for your loss. Fill in your location, and post any pictures you have.

Located in metro Detroit. I won’t be able to post any pictures until next week.

Restorations are a big task, and if your heart (and wallet) isn’t in it it’s probably not worth it. Post as many pics and details and get some good ballpark estimates before the vultures swoop in and offer you 50 cents and a used lollipop. Condolences first and foremost.

Sorry about your brother.

We need to know the condition the car is in currently. Does it run and drive? Is it rusty? Is it apart? Is it original? Color? Mileage? Engine condition?

FYI I sold a running and driving 72 911T that needed restoration last year for $65K. It was a solid car that needed restoration. They're a unique year and have their own fan base.

Learn as much as you can about it and report back. Ignore offers until you get educated.

Good luck.

Thank you all. I will post some pictures soon. I do know that a lot of preliminary work had been done on the car. The body was stripped and professionally repainted, there’s a new engine, the leather seats were redone. Everything is there but needs to be put back together. I did get an offer of 25k but I have no idea if it’s a fair offer.

Do not entertain any offers until you have educated yourself. Due to the increased value of these cars vulture flippers are in abundance.

Here is a project which appears to have just sold. Look through the cars for sale forum and you should be able to find some general comparisons.

So sorry for your loss. I definitely would post some pictures and wait for a few more offers. It already sounds like a car that will be worth more then 25k.

If it is a complete car and all the hard work has been performed (rust repair, paint, engine rebuild), which is sounds like it has, I think your floor is closer to $75k. Receipts and proof of high quality work can push that number higher; poor quality work and/or a bits-a car will see that number crater.

As others have stated, need pics and a schedule of work if you can provide it. Get the info you need here before engaging in pricing discussions with prospective buyers.

The vultures are already circling. Be careful.

Sorry for your loss.

The car is definitely worth more running and driving, but even with all the parts there, it could take a lot to finish. These cars nickel and dime you, and labor with somebody who knows what they're doing costs a bunch.

25k is likely way too little. 75k is likely way too much. It all depends on the quality of the paint job, who did the engine rebuild and with what parts, how good is the upholstery that's been finished, how complete and useable the parts are.

Photos and records (who did the work) are vital.

makes me think this is a complete car and not parts is parts type thing. All original car will be worth more. Is it an "s"? Unique color?
Hopefully you are not in a rush to sell, lots of really good guys and info here.

My suggestion would be to contact Bill Kelley aka Techweenie on this board. He is super knowledgeable about these cars and might be able to help you with finding a buyer at a fair price.

If you aren’t able to send him a pm, you can reach him via

Techweenie.com

I am working with Bill and find him to be both very knowledgeable and fair.
