1969 912 looking for price point to sell
I went to look at a 1969 912 local to me barn find. It is a bit more of a project than I have time for . I let the owner know that I thought his price point that he was interested in to move the car was high. I do think I have a price that I think the car has value at.
From the pictures hoping for help to place a price on this car. The body is strait. car reeks of bad fuel. I, in the Northeast, sold a 1968 912 coupe with 6x,xxx miles to a West Coast buyer late last summer. A Slate Gray "Barn find", surprisingly with original paint but needing paint. Long term older owner had it in his barn for a decade plus. Rust in the rockers and front pan had been addressed at some point earlier in its life, consequently the underneath was solid and not hacked. The body had numerous areas of surface rust and areas where someone skimmed body filler on dents but were never sanded much less finished and painted. Interior was all original and in a little better condition than your example. Brakes were all frozen. Engine was in place, turned over, and had a top end job (evidenced by new hardware and appearance) done by a DIY boat mechanic, driven around the block and then the car was parked for many years. Actually all original trim, lenses, and glass, never messed with. A five speed with no sun roof. After listing it for $17K and change I received an overwhelming response and sold it for full asking price within two days, sight unseen, to the West coast buyer.

I think the engine is complete. Like any other treasure hunt I had only heard that the owner had been sitting on the project for quite awhile. not having any info I was hoping to find a project that was say almost complete just needed some final assembly. We asked what he was thinking he said $30K. I think he could see from our expressions that we couldnt help but gasp. I told him I thought between $7-10K
That may have been a bit low he responded that at that price he would just give it to his Kid.I let him know that his kid may not really want to be part of his attachment. I offered to place an add for $15K. He said can you start at $18K. We were three and on the way home I asked each of the two others if they could get the car for free would they take it and we all agreed no |
$18-20k is the price for that car these days. Fix the engine and get it driving and it’s $30k. Value goes up from there based on one’s “investment “ in other things. Definitely not $30k as it sits.

Given the significant response I got on the barn find 68 and the fact that I had two buyers that were willing to pay full asking price sight unseen on day one...... I think I might have priced it a bit low.
But It also depends on how long you want the selling process to continue, and its a process, with lots of inquiries from deadenders ..calls and texts questioning .. "Will it drive with a battery and new gas?" or "What will it cost to be driveable?"............ I respond "this probably isn't the car for you" The process takes up your time. Shortly after selling the 68 I sold another 912 in the mid fifties. Not perfect but a pretty nice original car, a nice driver but not concours. Again I received a significant response and sold it within a few days. Again, I had a couple of customers battling for it. I think I underestimated the level of interest there is for 912s and how that interest drives the 912 market. |
I hope you are getting something for your time going over there and taking photos, and then advertising it and asking questions. It's work on your end and when you do this for people they generally do not care and always seem that they should or would have gotten more money - like $30k - if they did it themselves, to which they never would.

I just sold this 68 for $14,000. Complete with blank case motor. Rusty but all there.

This car doesn’t appear to be a New England rust bucket. No comparison.

Thanks for the feedback, I was coming to the personal opinion that it swings the value around by a few thousand dollars at the "project car" end given that it would cost around that much to source a 5 speed box if you were interested in ending up with one in the restored outcome
