newbie (to the list) seeking advise

I’m getting ready to plop down a ~small pile of money for a “sunny Sunday afternoon” car and I thought I’d pulse the list to perform a sanity check.

I’ve recently let go of a 1972 911 (coupe) that I’ve had for ~25 years, long story… Short version of that saga it that it hasn’t been fun for a long time.

I’m on the hunt for a ~1986 – 1989 C2 cabriolet.

In the last month or so I’ve driven 7 or 8 C2’s, some targas, some coupes and some cabs. I’m looking for something in the 50,000 to 80,000 mile range, original condition (paint and the like), and a real cream puff.

I’ve driven more G50 cars than pre 1987’s and I like the feel of the 915 gearbox & clutch. I know that the G50 is more robust, shifts smoother and it seems overly gated to me. I’m sure I could get used to it, and I’m wondering if I should really look for a 1987 & later?????

So from the vast experience of this list, what is a reasonable price range for a “cream puff” and do I really, really want a G50 (there has to be at least a couple 915 lovers out there…)???

Thanks,
Steve

If you like the feel of the 915, your in luck because they are cheaper to buy. I had an SC for years, and as long as you understand how to shift a 915 they are just fine.

If you want a Carrera 84 - 89 with the pre 87 's having the 915's, then that will narrow your search. You might want to also consider an SC, they have 915's and are great 911's too except just 1983 came in a rag top.

I'd focus on a color combo you like with a spread on the year model.
There are nice ones out there. Just take your time, but when a really nice example comes along be ready to grab it.

I'd look for a 911 that has a fresh look about it. A car that's been stored indoors and maintained. My first priority would be color combo, with paint and interior in great shape.
