Looks like a fake RS is for auction on eBay

It can't be positively ascertained from the listing, but something fishy seems to be going on with RS #406 listed on eBay currently.

The supposed "Porsche Certification" is actually info on a Mercedes.

The presence of undercoating and a sunroof would indicate a post-homologation car, but weren't there 500 lightweights produced initially?

Further, some folks on Early911SRegistry.com claim the "real" #406 is in a collection somewhere.

As RS values rise, we will likely see more of these questionable cars pop up.

The "Porsche Certification" the owner talks so much about is just a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche which is not very useful in determining the authenticity of a car made to decieve. The seller put another 'auction' to post photos of this document, but neglected to show the entire thing. Here is a link.

You are correct the undercoating in the engine bay is from a non-homologation car but there were many of the original 500 RS cars with sunroofs, mine included.

This car is a fake and I can prove it beyond all doubt. The real RS 406 sold on eBay out of Japan last year, it was confirmed by the production # photos that I sent to Kondradsheim, the author of the Carrera RS book. He has copies of the factory build sheets for all the '73 Carreras. The current seller will not provide this information nor is he willing to submit the information himself to the factory or Kondradsheim for verification. Case closed.

Everything about the listing is a warning flag. Down to the "+/-10% compression" statement. That translates to as much as a 20% variation between cylinders -- rebuild time.

Likely, this guy was less than diligent in inspecting this car and is attempting to pass along the pain.
