NEED HELP! NEWBIE looking at 73 911S
 

Hey everyone, this is my first post so be easy on me. I am a collector of corvettes and mustangs (MCA national champions, NCRS, etc.) BUT I am clueless when it comes to Porsche's, except that I have always wanted one and now I am in a position with some garage space so I am actively looking.

Long story short I have found at 73 911S Targa in Georgia that I am interested in, but being in Colorado, I do not have the time to actively view the car. What do you recommend me asking them in order to positively identify the car as a S and other pertinent information that would give me a clue as to the originality and condition of the car. This will help me out considerably by possibly saving me a plane ticket.

The VIN is 9113310067. The engine #6139022. Sounds like from the owner that it is a driver condition car that will definetely need some restoration work. That price seems low for an early 911 S. You might check with the the folks on this board:

Based on the pictures, the car look nice. (Pictures will always make the care look better.) The price seems to be a little low.

But . . . Any rust? Previous body work? Is the car complete? Engine and trans in good shape?

If the seller is in the business of selling 911's, and asking 11K he might be a little flexable with the price.

FWIW, the engine number is from a 73T, unless the sporto's were numbered differently. It should start with 633.

There really aren't that many questions to ask because the VIN and engine number are from a 911T. The seller is either crooked or clueless. Your call. The seats and mirrors are aftermarket. The tail is from another Porsche or aftermarket. The color isn't original.

Bottom line -- if you're looking for a real 911S, keep looking. SmileWavy

Correction- That second 3 would indicate an "S" .

A while back I was looking for an early 911. I went to go look at a 1972 911E targa. It had the oil filler door but the engine shroud was yellow, I thought it was supposed to be great. I decoded the VIN....which indicated the car was a 1973 911T coupe. Hmmmm. That didn't seem right. As I looked closer a number of things were "off" so I passed on that car. With this car I suppose it could be a 911s sportomatic but I think any potential buyer would have to check it out closely (or have it checked out by someone that knows what too look for). Especially for rust.
