Answer me this if you please...

Looking for opinions on this one and I'm purposely keeping it vague.

Assume you want a nice clean car mainly for weekend and pleasure driving. I've always been pretty anal so looks and condition are very important.

Given the choice, do you re-paint (new rubber etc.) your otherwise nice '84 Carrera to bump it up a notch or do you sell and put the same 10K (with maybe 5K more) into as nice a 930 you can find.

Assume the PPI on any new purchase checks out and the Carrera could pull 15K in today's market.

Or are there other options??

Keep the Carrera. A 930 is a different beast and when driven off boost is sluggish at best. Plus maintenance on the Turbo will be more expensive.. want to change plugs? drop the motor... ouch.

If you like your Carrera I say keep it and enjoy it. If you are tired of it (and judging from your list of cars, you just might be) then sure, sell it, and enjoy the "boost bong" ;)

Thanks racer,

Those cars were owned acquired over a long period of time. The 73 and the first 74 were bought new as well as the 84 and 86.

I know a bit about 930 performance and maintenance since one of my best friends has an 89 that I spend a lot of time with.

I love the speed and acceleration of the 930 but there is also something I like about the normally aspirated cars.

My opinion? I wouldn't and won't pay 10K for paint even if that's what it takes to do it right for "anal" satisfaction. I'd part with the car and let someone else decide what level of restoration (if any) is needed. But, if the choices are simply between painting and acquiring a turbo, well, I don't have a clue. That's a weird set of restrictions that can't be answered by just any every day logic. How can one compare a 10K paint job to another used car?

I hope I never get backed into a corner like that. :D

i'm going to offer a combination.

don't spend all that 10k on paint...as asumming your going single colour a great paint job runs well under that (say 7-8 and they do everything)...

then contact mb911, and order his turbo kit.... it will still be 90% of what is now off of boost...and like 180% once on it....and you have the new paint...

Interesting idea. I think though that I may be too stuck on original even at the expense of performance.
