We need more info!

How about wheels? Fuchs? Cookie cutters?
How about engine maintenance history/records?
"rust" color? not exactly a porsche code name...
Front spoiler?
Sunroof?
How are the seats? Cracked? Pristine?
Headliner?
Rear wiper?
What options overall?
Coupe? Targa?
Pop-off valve in the airbox?
Updated chain tensioners and valve covers?
A/C - does it work?
Dash cracked?

An SC can be $9k or $20K depending on actual condition/mods etc.

Most SC's seem to sell in the low teens, but they have considerably more miles.

Not to hi-jack the link...But how can you get in writing like a apprisal of how much the car could be worth with this type of mileage?

Go to Nada and they say a 1980 911 is only worth 10k? Kelly Blue book does not go below 1986 ...

Color sounds like "Rosewood Metallic."

Possibly. If it is in GREAT shape & PPIs well (you won't skip the PPI - with head stud check - despite the fact that it's a friend will you?) it might be worth more.

Color might be tobacco metallic 464.

Proceed with caution...

Get a PPI. It's getting very difficult to find an SC with 40K actual miles. I know you say this is a friend but that doesn't mean he got what he paid for. If he's not the original owner and records are sparce, run a Carfax report to see if the odometer is accurate.

I'll take an SC driven and well maintained with documentation over a garage queen with little or no provenance any day.

it is not a metalic color the color looks like a rusty guards red I think the code is 048 but not sure I'll have pictures monday afternoon. I did look at the car yesterday, it has sport seats, No rust at all very original underside, the tail is not original option is an all rubber black tail, the whole car has been repainted (very good job) in it's original color the front spoiler is just ok, but the car drives really nice it feels like a 40K mile car, I'm going to get a leakdown test probably next week

Thanks

The all rubber black tail is period correct. The reason any rear factory tail has rubber was German fear of pedestrian injury when operating the vehicle in reverse. The "all rubber" tail, however, might not be the best for the car. With age and (high speed) use it could become brittle and be likely to warp or fail completely. I have seen about 6 or so SC's equipped with the rubber tail. Not a fan, personally.

I would use a Porsche related market guide book as opposed to KBB or NADA. They have a slightly better feel for the market, it seems.

A PPI will tell alot. Market guides tell the rest. Even if the price is "fair", is an SC what you want? It could be that you might like another 911 model, or even something different like a Boxster. Just because it's your "friends" car doesn't mean it is right for you.
