I'll take a stab at it. Please don't be offended!
With the track mods that have been done to the car, you will limit buyers that are interested in buying a 911. There will be guys like me that will automatically go past your ad when they view the mods. I know when I was looking for my 3.2 Carrera in spring, I did not consider track prepped cars since it would cost too much for me to return the car back to stock or a more streetable condition. We all know that bone stock cars sell the quickest (all things being equal). So, you will need to be patient to find the correct buyer that values how you have enhanced your car. For an unmodified street car, an '84 coupe with 127k on it that may need some cosmetics (paint work, interior freshing) might be worth $12 to $15k depending on what mechanical issues need to be addressed. Winter is looming in the rust belt, so that limits the buyers as well since a lot of us northern buyers stop looking once real cold weather hits. It's too hard to mess with a new car or find a storage spot when there is snow on the ground, etc. If the car was mechanically perfect, full history, service up to date and with good cosmetics, pricing could be $15k to $18k. Once you get close to and above 20k, you can find low mileage, very nice early 3.2's for that money. Someone looking for a track car may value your car higher than the range I proposed above. Hopefully a person like this will respond as well. If no one responds to your ad, then reducing the price slightly (I'd go by $1,000 increments) will reveal whether the car was priced too high. I wish you the best of luck with selling your car! Jay 90 964 84 3.2 [Flame Suit On!] Last edited by Jay H; 09-25-2006 at 05:33 PM.. |

I could agree with that. The local Porsche gurus tell me that they would pay $17k-$18k for the car if they didn't already have track-prepped Porsches. One guy is actually selling some 914 stuff (2 cars and $1500 in performance parts) just to buy my car, but I am in kind of a hurry to kick the car out, so I am entertaining any reasonable offers. I have seen some go for high and low prices, usually depending on mileages.
Otherwise, it has a fully adjustable suspension, so it can be set to handle like a stock 911...it is just beefed up. The Rollbar can be removed, and a different exhaust can easily be installed as it already has the desirable SSI's. It is upgraded, but still runs stock class in auto-x (except for the wheels), and PCA track events. Still has all the a/c components, interior parts, and everything still installed (except the driver seat). For all practical purposes it would appear stock if it had Fuchs and a Bursch or other exhaust on it. Thanks for the honest input, I am glad no one is going to BS me in here!

Um.. $15K to move it.. 13-15 to move it quickly. $17K to maximize YOUR return.
While the track mods will limit your potential buyer pool, realize at the bottom of all of it, is a 22-23 year old car with over 100,000 miles, AND it has the 915 ("dreaded" compared to G50) trans, and its not a longhood ![]() Appearance issues would be the bigger turn off to a buyer. I've read of even higher mile cars selling for more because the paint is perfect. People like shiny, clean Porsches. Not the "battle scarred" ones that have seen track duty. My track prepped SC took months to sell and it took the mental mindset that although it was a sweetheart of mine, it isn't for everyone. The market bore this out by lowering the price till sold. Good luck on your sale. If I was looking for a 911, I would consider yours, but I too am going to try a newer watercooler instead. |

Okay, I have been driving and working on my 911s for 6 years and am lost as to what a longhood is. Anyways, I lowered the price again, so the first one with $16,500 takes it
![]() Thanks again for the input...much appreciated!

The "longhood" cars are the 1965 to 1973 911's. The hood is physically longer than the impact bumper cars of 1974 to 1989.
I'll echo racer's comments above about appearance. This stuff can apply to anyone selling a car and Dean, you may have done this already: Clean all your junk out of the car. Everywhere. Vacuum the heck out of the car and use Shout or Woolite or any other carpet stain remover to get the really messy stains out of the carpet. Buy a $3 bottle of vinyl dressing and, this is important, sparingly apply it to the interior vinyl without getting it super shiny or super wet looking. Dust everything including the dash, rear parcel shelf, gauges, switches, steering wheel/column cover, etc.. Wash the car. Wax it. DRESS THE TIRES with that $3 bottle of vinyl dressing you used in the interior. It's amazing how much nicer a car looks with evenly dressed tires. Clean the rims well. Dust off the engine as best you can. Again, use that $3 bottle of vinyl dressing on the plastic components in the engine compartment. Appearance is everything. Like Racer says, people want nice shiny Porsches (even though a week after they buy them they trash them full of dirt and junk themselves anyway). You're not trying to win a concours, just set your car apart from all the other dirty 911's for sale out there. Two hours of work can net you $500 more on your car if she's clean and presentable. Well, just because it has track mods and I claim that it needs little paintwork don't mean it is a club racer or has seen or done battle on the track.
When I bought the car 4 years ago it was in concours condition. I took it to the track once for DE and autocrossed it on 10 separate occassions (all on the same tires). I bought the car with the mods because I prefer the feel of a race car over a cushy, swaying stock setup. It has regular wear and tear from regular highway driving and the occassional tour or rally. I suppose it is ultimately hard to really allow folks to score your vehicle unless they see it in person. I will post more pics up this weekend on the for sale ad I have. Thanks for the honest input!
