Value of SC

I am contemplating selling my SC and wanted to get opinions on it's value. I have a 911 "quota" at my house like the NFL's salary cap and may want to make room.

Anyway, since this car is not your typical 911, I am open to feedback. It is a street car about to tip to the track side so I refer to it as my work in progress track trainer. Here are the stats:

1981 Sunroof Coupe, excellent mechanical condition, so-so cosmetics. 95k miles, used as an extra car at a vacation home and left outside.

The good:
*rebuilt documented 3.0L and limited slip trans <20k miles ago - pulls hard and shifts great - you can go into first on a roll
*22/28 torsions
*bilstein HD/Sports
*Poly bushing throughout
*turbo ties, stainless brake lines
*Momo Evo with harness
*Almost new ES100s on 6&7x16 fuchs
*rebuilt distributor by Jerry Woods
*short shift

The bad:
*straight body, but paint has little flaws like small bubbles around the windows. Otherwise it's not too bad...maybe a 10 footer and has had one very good respray in its original color.
*interior is full leather and sun damaged. Dash and rear package shelf burnt. Panels are good, headliner and carpet are ok.

The missing:
*AC and all related components (compressor, condensors, lines, etc.) are gone
*Heater blower and ducts gone

Bottom line:
This car drives excellent. One of the strongest running 3.0s I have driven and I have been using this car to autox, so it's well maintained and has quite a few new parts.

I would like to get the cost of the engine and trans rebuilds out of it, a little less than $11k. Realistic?

I know the car isn't perfect, but it's not terrible either. Of course, I could always part it but I want to avoid the hassle.

Tough to sell a cosmetically challenged car for average market value, even with good mechanicals. You are eliminating 90% of the buying pool, and the remaining 10% are generally going to be knowledgable, "enthusiast" (read: Cheap!) bargain hunters.

My guess: To sell that car you are going to have to go down to $8500K, on a good day, $7500 on a bad day.

Rockafella,

Ok well now I really need to come over and see you since you
have both a Carrera and an SC and talk about the pros and cons
of each... I will PM you for that.

I have been following the market closely ... here is what I know..
.. there is a guy in San Jose trying to sell a 74 that has an engine
and tranny rebuild (both) with a 3.0 but it needs paint, and he
can't for the life of him sell the car even at $8,500. I haven't seen
the car.
..there was a guy Cliff who is local and on this board who was trying
to sell his 78 SC with some body damage in a rear quarter panel
and was trying to get something under 10k and ended up parting
it out I am pretty sure.
..another guy on this board was selling a well-sorted out red/tan
targa SC..for around 10k..and he ended up selling to a buyer in
Germany (they are ga-ga over there about rust-free CA cars)
...another guy in the City has a 78 blue SC with an oil leak and
body work needed (minor) that he was told he could get 11k for,
and he was selling for $7.5 and still has it.

...there is always hope though. What if you yanked that leather
off the dash, the uncovered dash might be ok, same with the rear,
and got some cheap replacement stock seats, and a good detail, and
then smogged it and parked it on El Camino near Palo Alto / Stanford and put it on Craigslist at the same time...

while it is true that there are many wackos on Craigslist, I have also found there is a segment of rich people on Craigslist who come with cash, don't haggle a lot, and just appreciate what you are offering and buy it. You may have to wait a bit and/or be a bit patient but you have nothing to lose...

Rockafella,

Keep the sport-muffler-- I've liked every 911 I've driven that
has a sport muffler. On the interior just get a recovering set
or some used stock seats for them to both be the same, and
I think you'd be fine. Man if you can afford to keep 7-10k tied
up and live in the Bay Area, I salute you!
