oh boy 996 TT values are dropping
Man... im seeing 996 Turbos in the high 50's now....
time to start searching for one... |
I can still wish, $50k is still too rich for my blood.

I know. I'm actually planning to buy one in couple of years (or less, maybe). Prices are dropping pretty quickly these days but remember that these cars are expensive to fix if something goes wrong so I'll be looking for a lower mileage, newer car.

I am certainly not the person to ask about problem areas on 996TT's but I do know that when I do see them at Hergesheimer they tend to have mult-thousand dollar repair bills. Things like turbos, driveline issues, etc.
I remember one turbo was in there to have both turbos replaced due to some major malfunction and it was going to cost the guys somewhere over 10K for the job. |
hmmm...I spoke a while back with guys at SharkWerks and looked at their site, and the upgrades alone could be astronomical on those cars. I myself kinda looking at 996tt, but haven't heard much about reliability issues, would be nice to know though.

I was talking to a buddy who owns a high end shop in town and a high hp 996tt. I was telling him about my 930 build. He said I will be buying a 996TT, not I should, but I will. He seemed pretty conviced with it's superiority and he believed I would too. I can't argue with that. I'll give it another couple years of depreciation though.

Why a 996TT when you can have a 993TT in the 50s, 60s as well? IMHO the 993TT will hold its value better over time and provide a more satisfying experience!

996tt has much more hp potential than 993tt. But, who needs 800hp anyway? Guy who's one of the owners of SharkWerks has one, and it's driven on both: street and track. 993tt is beautiful older car, which with time will become less of a tool but more of a concurse competition item, maybe I'm wrong. Nevertheless, the fact that 996tt could be had for less than 993tt can not be ignored.

a 996TT is a superior car to a 993TT.
Not from an emotional level. Not from being water vs aircooled. Simply, by the numbers. The reason 996TT values will drop are 1) Quantity. They built thousands of them. Thousands more than 993 versions. 2) Perceived value. As a 996, they are slighted because, quite simply, they are NOT 993s. Some don't like their looks; some don't like the watercooled factor, but if you drive them they are fantastic cars. More spacious and comfortable than the 993s. Better ergonomics. Perhaps more sterile to drive than the 993's, but that is why they are faster. 3) Repair prices. Like any Porsche, they can be "cheap" to buy but are never, ever, cheap to maintain. twin turbos, computers, awd, dropping motors to do simple maintenance. Remember to the "good" that the 996TT motor is based on proven "dry sump" design, not the wet sump of the regular 996s. |
