Newbie looking for a 993
Hi, I've been on the fence for a 993 for too long now (2+yrs with lame excuses in between..) and am looking actively at the moment. Ideally a 6-spd silver or blue coupe/targa with 20k - 50k miles and history (maintenance/records) and that would pass PPI no prob.
I 'missed' a few from private sellers that were gobbled up by independents who marked them up >$9000+... I'm not looking for the cheapest sample out there. I'm willing to pay for a nice sample (not super $$ 'collectors car'), but mark ups like that are for me a bit excessive, especially since I'm learning what some sellers ask and that signs (Excellence, etc (who I learn could be a bit off...)) point to prices days which are more in line with my budget. Want to stay optimistic, so if any of you see or hear of any for sale, pls let me know. I look forward to owning one and joining in the fun here!! Cheers & Thx, /Peter |
i was going to comment on the Excellence 'market update' prices - but i see you have already edited your post.
In most cases, a 20k to 50k mile 993 will run you at least 34-37 thousand. (some may be a bit less, but you will soon be up to that mark with a few expenditures) I wouldn't be afraid of one with a few more miles that has been well maintained. |

Thx for your feedback. Yes, I took a good look at the 'Excellence pricing thread" and realized I may have someting to learn re this sensitive subject and put it in perspective to what I'm looking for... I'm all ears...still on a budget. Your indications seem to rhyme well with what I'm seeing, now I just got to find 'it'. Thx again. /Peter ps. nice rides |
Not sure if the price is market correct, but a 993 Targa, Silver, forget year, just got posted on www.dorkiphus.com (DC area porsche groupies).

Racer,
thx for heads up..will check it out...all the things I like, but 90k (which I know is 'nothing' depending on how it's been kept). Cheers /Peter |
I think that you can find a nice 993 (maybe with more than 50k miles) for $30k-$33k.
I'll keep my eyes open if I see and nice ones come up. |
peter, Wrong color and no price..Who knows

happe,
thx for the tip. I could combine it with a ski trip :) I'll check it out. May have a silver c4 going, but too early to say. Also, a '97 targa just cam on, but seems sold immediately (tough when I'm far away from it). Cheers /Peter |
Here is a cheap high-mileage blue 993 coupe in NC
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=403776 1995 $19,000 About 190,000 miles. |
There is a blue 1995 993 with 40k on it at bmw of charlottesville. go to crownauto.com and find the link for bmw of charlottesville. they want 40k for it and it is from a dealer so i am sure you can get it for a good deal less than that. they say it has all records. i didn't check. please buy it so i will stop looking at it. i have no affiliation with the dealer at all. I just pass this car every day and wait for it to leave so it will stop haunting me.
i did drive it and it drives well. granted, it is the only 993 i have ever driven. so, compare that to my SC or carrera there is a huge power difference. |

'Donkey',
Thx for the tip on the blue one. I've sent them an inquiry and will find out more. As listed, it's a bit over my budget...I'm looking (hoping) to make $35k (tax included) for any car I buy (It will roll about 3,000 miles/yr and Im on a budget...). Maybe they'll come down. The car reminds me of my first round of looking at 993's when I 'froze' (or was just stupid). A gentleman in MA had a midnight blue/Grey '95 C2 @ 21,300 miles on it in super/near perfect condition which he listed/sold for $36,500 about 16 months ago. I drove up to see it, but tried to be rational (!??) telling myself it was not within my budget and there'll be more (of the nice ones) for sale at more reasonable prices...took a one year break from looking...and now it looks like the prices are not necessarily lower and there are fewer out there...and realized that rational doesn't figure into purchase of a 993... Ideally, a '95-98 C2/4 with 35-60k nice, serviced 6-spd for $33k (+tax=$35k)...everybody has a dream. I'll let you know any development of the blue one. thx /Peter |
I don't know about 33k purchase but I wouldn't be surprised if you could get if for 35k. It has been there for around/over a month I believe. I know that I drove it at least a week or so before Xmas. You have to figure that they didn't pay anymore than 30k for the car. I wouldn't be surprised if they paid 25k for it.

What's wrong with upping your mileage range to 100k? That will bring the price down. Unless you will keep the miles off (garage queen), it makes no sense to pay a premium for a low mileage car. If you assume 200k miles before things get hairy and 10k miles a year, you can drive it for a decade ...
Just my two cents. George |

I might be selling my 993 (95 C2 60k miles). I am thinking of buying a Ford GT and if that is thge case the 993 will have to go. It will not be on the market before March anyway. I think your price expctations are fair. I think there are decent 993s out there for 31-33k. For example mine has 60k miles is a driver but it is in very good shape. I paid 33k for it and since I have changed the steering rack, put on 18" turbo twist wheels and front RS splitters. I think 33k-34k is a fair price. |
Peter
I was wrong. We are looking for a nice 993 to add to the family now and I can't find anything under $35k. I want manual coupe... Difficult. I apologize for my "off market" statements. |
Hi,
Thx for feedback. Looking at a '95 C2 with mid 30k miles tomorrow....hoping for a gem. I'll let you know the outcome. Cheers /Peter ps. The Donkey: The Iris Blue @ Crown is sold...it sure looked nice, but a bit far. They note they'll have a '96 Cr coming up with 40'ish miles, @ $42k....ouch. |
SwedeCT,
You must be right. I drove by there today and I couldn't find the blue one but I did see a grey/silver one. it was dark so I couldn't tell. I wonder what the final selling price was on the 95 Iris. Last I saw they had 38,999 on the window sticker and then it actually went up to 42,999. I couldn't figure that one out unless they had a sucker and he didn't know that it had been reduced. i will go take a look at it if you want. |
The blue high-mileage car was for sale on Pelican for $17k a few months back by a seller in Ohio. He said it was approaching the point when it needed some expensive work.
Oh the siren song of low price, how I must ignore you...... |
