Cheap 75... what's wrong?

THIS AD caught my eye because I have a raggedy 1974 Targa in my garage that I have been contemplating rebuilding. Well, the price advertised for this car is less than an overhaul on my engine would cost.

So the big question is WHY SO CHEAP?

I searched the user name and find that he has been trying to unload the car for several months... price ranges from $7250 to $5000, depending on which ad you come across.

Not a perfect car by any means. Sure would be good enough for a track dog.

I'm guessing as a 75 it would be a 2.7 engine, which is much maligned in the community. But the owner states that all updates have been done, including the studs - so the engine may be sorted out already.

His PM box is full, so he is either not checking it (bad idea if you're selling a car) or he doesn't know how to clean it out.

What does the Pelican community think of the car??

Thanks.

1) Its a '75 (only rated at 157hp)

2) Seat looks ripped

3) No front pan, motor or longitudinal pics

4) Cookie cutters

5) I don't see mileage listed.

6) Targa- not the best choice for a track car

Mexico Blue!

answer to "The Color?" - is Mexico Blue! Fantastic color. I have a 1975 S Targa in Mexico Blue. 2.7 can be a fantastic engine if "issue corrected", rebuilt WELL, SSI'd and M&K'd. I'm guessing (betting) at that price there would be a lot of surprises though. If you talk to the seller - and he has a ton of high quality pictures he can't wait to send you he and sounds like a stand up guy on the phone - and you get a PPI from a good Porsche mechanic that says "thumbs up" - than you found yourself a deal. Otherwise - it's the old adage "if it sounds to good....."

That's a great color. It's much better than turd brown which alot of '75's seem to be. I'd check the suspension points and underside for rust. If all of those engine updates have been done as stated, it's a good deal.

While I really do prefer a coupe on the track, a good 8 point cage will stiffen that targa right up.

And with only 157hp, it will make a good entry level Porsche track car for my wife. (She'll want to step up from the 100hp Mazda later this year.)

The mid year cars are always a tough sell, Targas are harder to sell than a coupe. These can be great buys if car is in good condition and has been well cared for, if not they can be hard to give away.

Probably nothing but sometimes potential buyers are scared away if the price is too low and location.

Seems like asking prices in the winter this year are really dropping for mid-years & SC's.

Looks like a very good deal if it has no major issues uncovered during the PPI.
