Early S prices??

I have been looking at S cars on ebay lately and it seems the reserves are never met. The last one was a 69 S Targa that was at over $30K and with 6 bidders that didin't sell because of reserve. So what are they REALLY selling for?

I saw a 911S Targa with A/C in a Hollywood classic car dealer a couple weekends back. Driver condition, nice but not perfect. I think they wanted $38k? At the same place, there was also a 56 Speedster for over $100K. I forgot the actual price. This car had cracked paint and was mostly a 20 ft car.

sold mine for 22K usd
but must add that although it had a fresh engine+SSI&mfi, done by a known top shop around here, the rest of the car was not good at all, bad gaps, bad paint, non original interior, no toolkit, no doorpockets, missing S-trim, non original fuchs , non matching nrs and in need of suspension refresh...

other then the engine, which was 9,5/10
i'de rate the rest of the car at 4/10

any car that has all the missing bits i listed, with a good engine, even if not freshly rebuilt , would fetch 30 USD... matching numbers ads to the price, perfect paint, perfect gaps, perfect restored chassi, engine, those are all plusses

but IMHO , basically the little tidbits and originality make the base price

Don't know of anyone who has ever bought a Sloan car, think he deals strictly w/ the high end collector type. I have never seen any of the ads priced logically. Maybe he has a secret to selling them.

i think his listings are all a practical joke.

why anyone would pay 2X or 3X what a car is worth is beyond me.

If those prices are true, the cars have nearly trippled in value in 3-4 years.

i think 3 years ago , a mint condition concourse state allready had those prices... problem is 90%+ of the earlies out there are not mint condition concourse state, definately not those that are driven on anything more then an occasional basis...

can't simply slap 3 prizes for E T and S and call it a day

there have to be additional parameters for "condition" and "originality"

and in the end, it depends on time of the year, prices in januari vs prices in say may... it fluctuates...bigstyle , few people spend big in januari, and many get the itch in may... fact of life, market prices reflect that

For a matching numbers perfect car with no issues, these prices are actually very accurate today (believe it or not).

Ok so are you guys telling me my 70 S Targa, now not in concourse condition, but all original, even down to it's paint other than touch ups, is worth close to $75K? It is a matching number car, no issues, case has never been split, lots of docs including the original window sticker, tool kit, glove box items and rest of that. I'm in shock!

eeh
no, i doubt 75K is realistic

75K would mean nothing wrong with it whatsoever
and pretty much ready for concourse, everything done that should be done, no rust, perfect paint, perfect engine, pretty much perfect everything

yours , hard to tell , but it should fetch good money
depends on how dry the engine is, what compression , leakdown numbers it has and how the rust situation is..

that it never was rebuilt , let alone split, probably means it could use a rebuild ( in the eyes of a potential buyer )

A car, (like anything else), is worth whatever the market will pay for it. I would guess that in an honest auction, your '70 911S targa would fetch $25-$30k depending on actual condition and originality. In other words, no hidden rust, reasonably low miles, nice original or NOS door pockets and carpet, car looks/drives/smells good in reality, etc...

The sky-high prices are reserved for coupes in the right colors that are just as tight as a snare drum, IMO.

That all makes sense. I think you all have hit it right. I'm thinking my car would bring $25 - $30K realistically. Stijn and I have / had comparable cars I think. Stijn, did your buyer do a PPI or did they buy unseen?

no comparison mate, i don't even needto see yours upclose to know mine paled in comparison door gaps 15 mmm
no trim, nothing matching, interior and wheels non original

yours is worth twice what mine was worth at least

no ppi, but he brought a "mechanic" along , who drove it , no compression test or leak down, buyer never even drove it himself

it went off for a restore... it was a banker who would just drop it off somewhere and pickit up months later finished

the only thing really good on mine was the engine , and basically the price reflected that...

it was photogenic at times, and did pull like a mother with the new engine, but in the end, it was a bastard car... and it drained me in more ways then one ...

I not have seen your car personally but this range seems too low based on the photos and description above. I would think $35-40K depending on a condition 2 or 3 car (as defined by SCM). Just MHO of course.

A local friend sold his 2.4L 'S' Targa recently for $40K and it was, IMHO, a matching #s, nice driver condition car (closer to 3 than 2 condition).
