Real 993 Values
 

I recently sold a very nice 356 and am now seriously looking for a 993. I've found most 993's listed in the $40K-60K range and very few cars listed under $40K.

1. Do the 993's listed in the $40's and low $50's actually sell close to asking price?

2. If so, what's filling the $30-$40 range? 996's?

3. Are the prices in the recent "Excellence" articles regarding 993's reasonable? What mileage is assumed in the articles?

4. What's the downside of buying a car with 40-50,000 miles? Seems like asking prices drop considerablely on cars over 40K.

I'm willing to spend $42,500 for a 993, but want a fully documented car in excellent condition. Not too concerned about year or model. I expect to drive the car about 5,000 mi a year. If I rely on the "Excellence" articles, I think I'd be insulting to sellers.

Lots of questions, I know. Maybe its the Corona's.

I am mostly looking for 87-89 Carreras but i've toyed with trying to squeeze into a 95 high-miles 993, which you can find between 25-28k,
but it will have issues. For 30-40k you should have no issues getting a decent if not nice 993. Yes people brag on these boards about how they keep their value but hey like any car, the older it is, the more it depreciates. I am pretty sure you wont be able to get a 97 or 98 C2S which are the most desirable models those are much more.

For example you could get a 97 C4S - this one is pretty nice with about 60k and a recent top-end done by a Porsche dealer in Burlingame:

I saw this car and it is quite nice. Its probably a driver not a show-car
but I am sure would be fun. Couldn't take it for a test drive since the owner needs to be present. If you want me to take it for a drive on your behalf let me know ;) I know of a very nice red 964 for sale in San Louis Obispo also for 20k... if you want to check that out for me ;)

I think 993 real transaction prices are a dirty little secret. A friend just picked up one that is in almost perfect condition, has about $20k in upgrades (suspension, Recaros, wheels, etc.) and 100k on the clock. Transaction price in the upper 20s. Everyone here will tell you that is a $35k+ car.

Another friend picked up a 96 with 60k miles for $35k. Again, almost perfect condition. As I recall, asking prices were much higher, but real transaction prices were nothing close to asking.

It's just money......

It takes a pretty nice, low mile 993 to fetch over $40k.
Some sellers hold out (or try to hold out) until they find a buyer looking for their particular car.

A high mile car with lots of mods is a hard car to pinpoint the price on. If the $20k spent includes refurbishing the engine, etc, etc. , and the aftermarket add- ons are what your friend likes, he got a great deal.
Some buyers will just see that 100,000 mile number and not even consider the car. (no matter how good it may be)

As these cars are now 10+ years old, the range of the condition they are in is starting to vary widely; that is why I think you are noticing the selling/ asking prices varying widely too.



That sounds about right. IMO it takes a low mile, desirable color, good records , etc. etc. car to bring in the $40s right now.
The 993s you see in the $50s are almost certainly C2Ss or C4Ss. ( and it takes a pretty good one to bring that kind of money)

I think you can find a pretty nice 993 for $35k (like the one Rockafella mentioned); and I think the asking prices are relatively close to that.
(Like any car sale, most sellers tack on a bit so they have a little negotiating room, or hope for the big score) :)

Above opinions based on friends and acquaintances 993 buying/selling; and reading the rennlist 993 forum, where everyday there is someone buying or selling -and informing the board of the actual transaction price.

A freind of mine picked up a 97 with 95K on the clock in Califoria back in the summer. Bone stock, white exterior, black interior. Passed PPI with no issues. Paid a hair under 25 for it. I have driven it and it is a nice tight car....

This thread is aging, but I thought I'd add another data point.

Here's a 993 Cabrio with relatively low miles at AIC. If he's got this thing priced below $50,000, then most 993's will be below $50k. AIC always has a premium on their cars.

I too agree that 993's in the high $40k's and low $50k's are most likely either the "S" models or very, very low mileage examples or both.

I bought a '95 C2 today. 118K on the clock, but car is in excellent condition, PPI perfect. 25K from Dawydiak. I searched for 6 months for the right car in the mid 20s. Lots of REALLY good ones for 35K out there...

Ya know, the final transaction price is based on the value, that day, to that buyer and seller. Period. Nothing new. It appears some folks seem to feel there is magic to it. Or divine intervention.

Dumb luck and persistance play a part.
