euro 85 carrrera worth?
 

Hello,

I just looked at a euro 85 carrera. It looks like it was brought over by the orig owner quite a few years ago and has the proper emisions paperwork.

It is black on black with 107k miles, it does have a tail, but looks aftermarket (or did the euro cars have a different tail?) the current owner has some paperwork on the car , but not all the way back. Things I do have papers on are:

new bilsteins all the way around, new rotors/pads, new ball joints, wheels bearings repacked/replaced...new speed sensor on the motor. The car has the newer 8way power 911 seats, it has been repainted, but looks like it was a good job.

The engine has a couple small oil leaks, but looks dry for the most part, since I don't have all the maintaince history I am going to have a leakdown test done. Is there any other big items I should look for?

Also, as far as it being a euro car, what does that mean for differences? Does the engine have more power? Is it more desirable? This car does have a sun roof, and it does still have a cat on it, it didn't seem to have any more power than an 86 I have driven recently.

I have a RoW 85 cab, but it doesn't have the side markers or Euro lenses anymore. The RoW models should have a tranny cooler and 231 hp v.s. the US 207 hp. the tail looks similar to the early whale tail or the Weissach tail. However, I don't believe those had that on big continuous vent. Instead, they had 2 seperate vents or 1 decklid vent and the rearmost vent filled.

This car does have the euro side markers, it definitely doesn't feel like it has 231 hp, but it does have a cat, which I have read takes it down to the US hp levels. I am guessing a cat bypass and a chip/exhaust would make a significant difference in this car?

Where is the tranny cooler located, so I can verify that it does have one.

It's real important to know where it came from and what year it was brought to the US. Germany is rust city and the cars are driven hard there as well. Unless it came in practically new, I'd pass.

Another issue is mileage. The speedo is changed to MPH and there may be many tens of thousands of undocumented miles.

The euro cars are not considered "rare" but some performance oriented people think of them as being more desirable, as they often came with less options. I.e. no sunroof is practically impossible to find on US models. You don't have that bonus on this car though! ;)

Remember that oil leaks never get smaller. A maintained car should not have any oil leaks. Unless the car is cheap - 12k or less, I'd pass on this one. Maybe prices are a bit higher in your location, but here in the Bay Area, that's a 12k car. :D

I think geographical location and time of year may come into play on this. It's spring in the rust belt and people are itchin' for cars.

If the repaint is done to a high standard, a decent reason for the repaint is present, the interior is nice and the oil leaks are not too bad, this could be a $14,000 to $15,000 car in a hurry in the midwest or east coast areas. You can't find nice Carrera's (even with this mileage) for $12k around these parts.

However, I will not disagree with George that the car may bring $12k on the left coast...

Porsches must be the only thing cheaper here in Can'taffordya compared to the rest of the nation ... ;)

I have a 85 carrera, I thought it was euro because it had the euro rear bumper guards like yours and it also had euro front bumper trim that replaces the US second turn signal. A closer look at the vin# showed it was a US car. Euro cars have either a catalytic bypass on them or a pre-muffler, not a catalytic converter. Look at the Vin# on the inner door jam or the windshield pillar on the drivers side. If the fifth to last # is a 0 it is a euro car if it is a 2 it is US.

By the way the tail is a rubber tail that was an option on the 1975 to 1977 911S.
