Feeler: I'm considering selling my 89 3.2 Cab

I've caught the 993 bug and I'm considering selling my 89 3.2 Cab. It has 65,000 miles, Black over Cashmere Tan partial leather. The paint is very good. The leather has the normal cracks in the driver's bolster, but no tears. The top looks to be original. It has very small tears that have not worsened over the course of the year I have owned it. The rear window is clear and uncreased. Since this is not a concours car and the top is often down I decided not to replace it. Just another thing to worry about!

I have made some minor mods which can all be reversed: Strut brace, replaced shift knob with OEM Cashmere shift knob, Lloyd's mats to match Cashmere carpets, 17" Fikse FM-10s with 1000 miles on Kumho tires. I have the original Fuchs (6 and 8).

The car had a 60,000 mile service at 59k. I just had the A/C recharged (R134), the oil changed, and the valves adjusted. I replaced both door stays and the driver's side weatherstripping which was torn from the POs kicking it with their heels. All dash light bulbs are brand new.

The car has had only one problem in 7,000 miles of driving this year - the driver's side rear sway bar mount broke. This was repaired.

The car gets comments every time I drive it. The car is always warmed up to operating temperature before driving above 3000 rpm and almost never used on short trips.

Being fairly new to air/oil cooled Porsches I have always been particularly concerned about premature valve guide wear. My mechanic cannot detect this problem and states that the car is running totally in spec. It consumes about 1qt/1000 miles and, besides a few isolated incidences, never smokes (not even on startup).

I'm thinking of asking $27,500. Considering that the buyer could easily get $2,500 for the Fikses with tires, I think this is fair. I'm in NY metro area.

What do you think?

That's a nice looking car, and a black and tan 89 Carrera is always going to be popular.

I think there's no doubt, though, that if you can get $2500 for the wheels and tires, you should sell those separately and put the original Fuchs on. IMO, you win on 2 counts, first, you'll get the $2500, and second, the car will be easier to sell with the 6/8 Fuchs on it.

The price is high, too. Put the original Fuchs on and hope to get $23K.

please read last months excellance in regard to cab prices.

most sought after and commanding highest prices 87-89 in order:

1)speedsters

2)cabs

3)coupes

4)targas

2006 was cabs final dip in price for excellent condition. 2007 i think they listed $31,989 or near that.(cant member thangs im too old) check out copy and you will be pleasantly SURPRISED!

you are under pricing at 27,500. A low mileage cab should be listed at 30k. I do think this is a tough time to sell a cab in the Northeast.

keep us updated if you sell, I'd be interested to see what you can get. I'd be surprised is you can get 28, 29 or 30K for a 65,000 mile '89, but you might as well start high and see.

Great looking car.. what about the 993 bug has bit?

Personally, I think $27 is too high, especially in the current market conditions. Is it potentially worth $27? maybe... but you must be very patient. $27K buys a nice 964, a higher mileage 993, or a 996, or Boxster S.. and that's just other Porsches competing for your dollars.

Remove the $2500 Fikses and you're at $25 which is a much better starting point imho.

Good luck.. but make sure your really want to sell it.. cause it will cost more to buy it back

Keep the cab and buy a separate 993. They are two different cars. The 87-89 drive and feel like a go-cart, the 993's more like a slick rocket but the stock suspension is mushy and loses all the old road feel.

Racer: I love the look of the 993 and the added benefit of being able to take my two children with me. As for the comparison of a 3.2 with a 964 - I think most people favor the 3.2. I'm not sure its justified, but I know when I was looking I totally skipped 964s. I looked only at 3.2s with G50s and 993s.

umfan: Man, do I wish I could have both. My wife has been very good about my hobby, but I can't justify a fourth car (including our two daily drivers) when she has bathrooms and a kitchen to do. As for the suspension, I drove a 95 993 with aftermarket suspension (lowered and corner balanced) and fabspeed exhaust and I was blown away.
