Why are there no good 87-89's around?

I've been looking around for a nice 87-89 coupe. I've passed on a few cars and deals that I could have had in the winter (long story but I could have had several good values in the 13-17k range). Everyone said that in summer sorts of cars will come on the market and there will be tons of choices. But where are all the cars? Cars.com is pretty lean, as is craigslist, even this forum is looking lean lately! Its a little easier to find 84-86's and SC's but even those in good/great condition are getting rare. I recently started resuming my search ... those of you who have been looking continuosly tell me whats up?

Because their owners know a good thing when they have one?

acegx 06-18-2007 05:11 PM

I see great cars on E bay all the time....it just takes a little patience but they come up regularly. The good ones are not going to go for $13-17k though so not sure how much you want to invest.

Your statement above is true. These cars make such good daily drivers that many of them continue to be driven on a regular basis and therefore are getting "used up" as each day goes by. More wear and tear builds up and once very low mileage, pristine cars are now getting up there in mileage and are showing their age.

For example, a 1987 911 with 50,000 miles can only have traveled 2500 miles per year on average. 2500 miles is garage queen status, especially in warmer climates where these cars can be driven year round.

I bought a 1984 911 Carrera last year that had 90k on the clock. That's only about 4100 miles per year. 90k isn't exactly low mileage.

So, to find an exceptional, low mileage 3.2 liter car, you're going to have to find a very pampered, garage queen, and/or concours type car. Since these are rare (most people drive their cars), it'll take a while before cars like these shake loose.

Plus, the economy is relatively robust right now, so people are holding onto their toys and not liquidating stuff to make ends meet.

Just my $.02.

Ton of cabs...check ebay

hytem 06-21-2007 07:02 AM

There seems to be more old 911s around for sale than there are buyers. And a lot of them are well-cared for. It isn't that easy to sell one at a decent price.

trader220 06-21-2007 11:33 AM

I dont think its hard to find a good coupe at all... they're not on every corner but they're out there.

fondeportago 07-24-2007 09:14 PM

you might want to ask the mechanics who specialize on porsches for leads. i know of a couple that were very helpful when i was looking around here in the south bay. mechanics would already know about the cars they'd recommend because they would have already worked on them.

Interested in a car that needs some work? I ran across this today on Craigslist. I have no affiliation. Check it out:

1987 Targa (120,500)that I have had for one week that is unable to pass smog. Paint, body, and targa top is in excellent condition, new tires with less than 100 miles on them. Smokes on start up, but not after its warmed up. My mechanic says that the valve guides on one of the cylinders is causing the problem. Basically, it needs a valve job. I personally have over 13K into the vehicle but am willing to take a loss as I need the money for a home remodel.

umfan866 08-02-2007 08:59 PM

Thanks but I'm staying the heck away from that car. The "valve job" most likely means a top-end motor rebuild for 10-12k. I'm trying to find a car where that's already been done!

BTW ALWAYS do a carfax. there is a black 88 in belmont for 15k but I did the carfax and it was in an accident!!

fondeportago 08-02-2007 10:32 PM

amazing how the seller says he has $13k into the vehicle and claims he has only had it for a week

trader220 08-03-2007 06:22 AM

13 k into the car means his price plus sales tax plus whatever it cost him to have his mechanic check it out plus what he paid for the failed smog check. Not that big a deal. Whats the cost of a good top end job in that neck of the woods?

snaga61 08-04-2007 07:21 PM

I have an 89 on Graig's list.

snaga61 - Thanks - I think we exchanged some emails. I'd be all over your car if it was a coupe, but I've decided I just can't do a Targa. I love the lines of the coupe and how it looks from the rear. I even taught my wife the difference between a coupe and Targa and now she reminds me whenever I think I might be able to do a Targa.

This 1987 on Craigslist sounds pretty nice! I know it's a Targa, but here's the ad anyway. The guy has some nice pictures on his ad. The link is:

1987 Porsche 911 Targa red with black leather. Car is in excellent condition. All the recipts are available. Comes with a new targa top and a new stereo with speakers. Recently had a motor out service ($5400) with a complete overhaul. Tires and brakes are at 60 percent. Runs and driver great. Needs nothing. Paint is glosssy and smooth. The interior is very fresh. Car is located in Concord. Call Tim for more information. 925-337-0003

trader220 08-08-2007 06:16 AM

Okay whats the catch on that car?

acegx 08-08-2007 05:36 PM

Jump on it fast.... you can't steal in slow motion...."the car needs nothing" it says. How many miles on this thing? Has it been in a wrecked? Do a CarFax on it. I agree with Trader 220- "what's the catch?

umfan866 08-08-2007 09:13 PM

bxtech --

Don't worry I saw that other Targa for $10,990 on CL and called the guy immediately a few days ago, the same day it was posted. He said he already sold it (I called at 6:30pm). I said what was the deal. He said he nothing was wrong with it, he was a broker and sold it for a customer. But apparently not a Porsche broker, since I asked him what else he had, and he said that getting a Porsche for him was really rare. I said you know those cars usually go for like 13k-15k (that's probably an understimate too) -- in any case he said "well that's probably why it sold so quick!" So either he didn't know the true value of the car, or didn't care, or the customer needed it sold the same day... but apparently the car was really a no-issues car. There ARE deals out there you just got to be ready to jump on them.

GothingNC 08-09-2007 03:34 AM

The buyer of that 87 Targa sure got a super deal and I hope the person enjoys it instead of posting it on Ebay a few days later.

I dont know the specifics on the engineering of the ABS and 4wd system I do know they're tied together and its a VERY expensive fix.

The car has a strong running enjine. Nice clean interior but at this time has a crack in the dash and I'm going to try to repair it. It was painted sometime back by the previous owner and not origianal color. It used to be red. Tires have good tread. I put new front rotors, brake bads, inner and outer bearings. They were not worn badly but were due for replacement. Also the rear emergency brake pads were replaced in June. The car has the typical porsche oil leak and I'm not sure if it's just a matter of tightening a bolt here and there or not. If your're familiar with these kind of cars then you probably know. It has a kenwood stereo system with CD player and flips around to hide into the dash when the key is off. Has power door locks and power windows, power bucket seats which are very comfortable. A few little things need to be fixed like the high beams don't work and I'm not sure if it's just the light bulbs or what. power rear view mirrors don't work. That's why I'm asking three thousand below low blue book. It's got a 3.2 litre and the more desirable tranny (I think it's called G50) It has 198k on the speedometer and these cars have been known to run strong and still be in great shape for well over 200k miles. If you're not familiar with this type of car, these were made very well, high performance and it's hard to improve upon the design and parts etc. I have it financed through Capitol one and the tittle will be mailed to you in three or four days. They are easy to deal with. Your chance to own a classic for way less than they are going for. Check around and compare for 87's with the more desirable 3.2 litre engine and this type of tranny. The car is at 1540 Ink Grade Road, Pope Valley 94567. I can be reached on my cell phone 7am to 12midnight -Steve 707-217-5112

umfan866 08-17-2007 09:39 PM

I have not inquired or gone to see that car for these reasons:

1. its a targa.
2. it has basically 200k miles on the odomoter and no mention of a rebuild.
3. it is leaking oil
4. repaint in non-original color

I don't know do you guys think its still worth going to see at 9k? I guess that is pretty cheap but how about the old adage that these are all 20k cars... I think I'd rather spend 15k on a decent car with good maintenance.

deathpunk dan 08-18-2007 05:53 PM

There's an 86 (I know, I know, this thread is for G50 3.2s but whatever) coupe in RI for $11k...car has 149k on it...anyone curious about it? I'll go check it out if you want. Were I not balls deep into fixing up a 71, I'd be all over it.

Pending PPI, of course.

This is our 1987 Porsche 911 Cabriolet, The interior is black leather with a black exterior. The top is new and the car has 74,000 miles on it. We just dont use it too much and Its time to find a good home for her.(ok so I love my car). It just seems like a crime to let her sit so call if you have any questions I will post pics up in the morning. Thanks

imcarthur 08-26-2007 02:10 PM

That 87 sounds too good to be true. It ain't original for one thing. The post http://sacramento.craigslist.org/car/405419080.html

Guys,

Yep the add for that "87" doesn't quite compute - the picture is of a 964. I forwarded the link on to someone who is looking for a cab - I'm not.

I have a PPI tommorow on a nice red/black 87 that I found, of all places,
on the Pelican Parts for Sale board... I'll keep you posted. In the meantime
there do seem to be some "deals" out there.

don911 08-27-2007 08:05 PM

This was just posted. Not a screaming deal but in my opinion the best 87-89 911 produced.

umfan866 09-05-2007 07:41 PM

The PPI I did didn't work out so we (buyer/seller) agreed to go our separate ways. So.... please do send me your leads on 87-89 G50 cars, preferably red, white or black with a recent top-end!

BReyes 09-05-2007 07:57 PM

Did you guys see that 89 coupe listed recently for top dollar?

umfan866 09-05-2007 10:12 PM

Do you mean the link above? Its in Texas, and I'm in California, so no I haven't seen it or inquired. It does look nice, but for that kind of money I can get an 86 Turbo.
I personally am looking for a driver, not a museum piece or garage queen. Something in the 80,000 -150,000 miles range.

GothingNC 09-06-2007 03:47 AM

You missed a white 89 Coupe that just sold in Maryland with 115,000 miles that was listed for $14,900

Recent clutch and all maintenance up to date.
